A Labour party councillor has attacked a group for picketing the clinic of a Fianna Fail TD.

Cllr Aodhan Ó Riordain said that in his view, pickets held outside the clinics of Fianna Fail public representatives are not a legitimate form of protest. The contemporary Euro-American LGBT movement emerged out of the gay and lesbian liberation struggles associated with the radical politics of the 1960s, which in turn were inspired by mass revolutionary movements prominent at the turn of the twentieth century. Yet today the majority of men and women active in LGBT politics seek not revolutionary social change but inclusion within the boundaries of mainstream liberal culture. They tend to organise as a single-issue interest group seeking legislative reforms (for example, amendments to marriage laws), and unlike their forebears pose no radical challenges to either capitalism or the state.

The Irish Doctors' Environmental Association (IDEA) and the European network, Health and Environment Alliance have asked candidates in the Euro Election if they commit to a number of objectives related to improving people’s health and wellbeing through a better environoment. Having studied the issues, Joe Higgins informed these groups that their proposals were closely in line with his and the Socialist Party’s views.

Yesterday the unionist parties of the Spanish state of both ruling leftwing PSOE and rightwing opposition PP, who have never agreed on anything other than pay-rises, united to elect the leader of the Basque branch of the PSOE as first minister of the Euskadi region for their loyalist commitment to the project the PP saw a young up and coming member (before only noteworthy for her thoughts on condoms [she'd never use one]) appointed speaker of the Basque parliamentary house. The Lehendakari (taoiseach) of the last ten years of the PNV majority centre right nationalist party who have always held the post thus passes into history. read full story / add a comment
