Shell to Sea Galway pulled off a great publicity stunt last Saturday on the first night of the Galway ocean races of which Topaz is a main sponsor. The aim was to inform people that Topaz is Shell and encourage people to boycott Topaz. They arranged for a Kila member to wear a Shell to Sea t-shirt while playing on the Topaz mainstage, handed out fliers in the crowd and had several anti-shell/anti-topaz banners in the area. One banner which read 'Let's Do It Galway, Send Shell to Hell, Corribsos.com' was unfurled at the foot of the stage while Kila was playing, and when security attempted to take the banner from Shell to Sea and Climate Camp activists in the crowd, a Kila member came down from the stage, retrieved the banner from the security guard, and put it up on stage for everyone to see! read full story / add a comment

Reuters and other newswires are carrying an Iranian story in the last hour that the revolutionary guard have arrested 114 "devil worshippers" and seized drugs and alcohol during a party in a southern city. "Cutting (their own) skin and sucking up the blood was among the indecent behavior of the group," Mehr News Agency quoted Colonel Abbas Hamedi of Iran's Revolutionary Guards in the city of Shiraz as saying. He said a Guards intelligence unit launched an investigation into the all-male group about one year ago, leading to their arrest Sunday evening. "The group's aim was to promote irreligious behavior," Hamedi, adding they had posted footage of their parties on the Internet. The Islamic Republic, which bans alcohol and narcotics, last year said it would launch a crackdown on "indecent Western-inspired movements" such as rappers and satanists. Which all sounds dandy to the general public who probably don't know about the Melak Taus read full story / add a comment

national / animal rights / opinion/analysis Monday May 25, 2009 10:48 by Bernie Wright
The animal liberation movement has the mammoth task of exploding the myths behind so-called "humanely produced" animal products, such as cage-free and free-range eggs or meat that is "certified humane." We try to expose the truth behind the marketing of food products that supposedly cause less harm to the animals used to produce them--foods that are meant to assuage the guilt of people who are concerned about animals (sort of) but who stop short of not eating them. Of course this eases their consciences about causing suffering to animals. It is a half measure. read full story / add a comment
