Working people continue to bear the brunt of the economic recession in terms on job cuts, poverty wages and house repossessions, while the rich and powerful in our society are bailed out again. This is state capitalism and comes under various forms from thatcherism to neo-liberalism. The speaker will present a brief overview of neo-liberalism and how it affects working people and the environment. Is neo-liberalism just naked capitalism under a different name? Does increased state involvement in the economy signal the end of neo-liberalism, or is it just a temporary measure? read full story / add a comment

The much appraised living standards of the west are not to be envied as they are created at the cost, murder and sufferring of millions of humans and the inevitable destruction of all natural live on earth. Thats why the promise of economic development is a lie, a myth. It is based on the philosophy that the wealth and living standards of Europeans and Americans are more important than the welbeing and survival of any other life form on earth. read full story / add a comment

Indymedia readers will be familiar with the work of Frank Connolly- He is the closest thing we have had to a good investigative journalist in this country for many years. The Corrib Gas report, Quarryvale and most recently his untangling of the corrupt mess that emerged from the incestuous nature of the Galway Tent, Dublin Docklands and the Anglo Irish Bank are just a few examples of why we need vocal independent and committed people like him to help us try to hold our political elites to account. It might seem surprising that someone with his track record would write an unreservedly supportive article about Siptu’s recent performance under the stewardship of Jack O Connor, under whose leadership the union has accepted the inevitability of attacks on workers as the first and maybe only solution to a crisis that could disenfranchise a generation. Remember the day of action that was called off? The Pensions levy? read full story / add a comment ![]()

Oil and Gas multi-nationals always get what they want. That is, the resources for next to nothing. And nothing will stand in their way. This week 25 Peruvian Indians were massacred by the military. The same thing has happened elsewhere in South America in other countries and in Africa a-la Nigeria. In our own country, to avoid bloodshed, our politicians just handed over the resources for free. In Bolivia where Evo Morales nationalised their Natural Gas, death squads were sent out to kill him, with one of their own being Irishman Michael Dwyer who worked for a large oil company in Mayo. Anyone notice a trend here? So read on to find out what happened in Peru this past week...
Awajun, Wampis, mestizos y blancos unidos en defensa del territorio, luchando para derogatoria de los DS Awajun, Wampis (native tribes), mestizos (mix of native and Spanish blood) and whites united in defence of the land, Struggling to repeal the Court Orders An ongoing, many month old peaceful protest in the Bagua region of the north western area of Peru was brutally attacked this week by state forces, resulting in the deaths of, at least, 25 native Indigenous Amazonian Peruvians. A motorway in the "curve of the devil" region had been blocked by local communities of the area who feel their land, health, livelihood and community is threatened by the government's giveaway of the area, and its precious resources, to multinational oil and gas exploration. They are perhaps right to feel sad, threatened and terrified, knowing how things have faired in neighbouring areas with a similar story, Sion, Equador and beyond... Perhaps even as far a field as Rossport. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The Bulgarian Queer-Community is under attack by neo-nazis, last year a Queer march was attacked byfash scum who threw Molotov cocktails at the parade. This year its under threat again and a member of the Bulgarian Parliament has called for it to be attacked. Full text at link. On June 28th 2008, neo-Nazi groups aggressively attacked the first LGBTQ Pride march in Sofia, Bulgaria. A week before the march, the Bulgarian National Alliance, the most visible nationalist organization in the country, called for a “week of intolerance.” The BNA strongly encouraged nationalistic groups to organize themselves against the right of the queer community in Bulgaria to peacefully march, which resulted in loosely organized violence during the festivities. BNA members and other neo-Nazis threw molotov cocktails and small explosives at the participants of the Pride march. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, more than eighty skinheads, including Boyan Rasate (head of the BNA) were arrested for their attempted harm and direct violence toward pride participants. This year neo-Nazi groups are once again organizing themselves against the march and Bulgarian queers’ ability to defend their human rights. read full story / add a comment
