While in Cobh today, we also met some of the local fishermen who still manage to work despite years of depredation by the pharmaceutical industry in the harbour. We passed on to them copies of this letter printed here which we encourage anyone else with any contacts whatsoever in the fishing community to use to communicate to the the situation to other fishermen. I am also looking for information regarding the state of the fishing industry in Ireland over the last 60 years.
I am coming to understand that our fishing rights have been given away as surely as our oil and gas over a longer period. I am convinced that these issues have to be linked in the common consciousness.
A significant difference being that fishing, done right is a renewable resource. It ain't being done right now. The sea is being f**ked and so are the fishermen. If only ye could stand together lads. read full story / add a comment

Not one single word of the Lisbon Treaty will be altered by these guarantees, which is why they do not need to be ratified by the National Parliaments of the 27 Member States. The so called ‘legal guarantees’ are nothing more than an interpretation by EU Heads of State as to what they think the Lisbon Treaty means. However, if the Lisbon Treaty comes into force, it will be the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg which will interpret Lisbon. The EU Court is the only body authorised under the European Treaties to interpret the Treaties themselves and decide how they should be applied. The political decision and agreement of a particular group of EU Prime Ministers and Presidents, which is what we are being presented with, cannot and will not decide what Lisbon means. read full story / add a comment

In its ongoing campaign of picketing Galway businesses unethically selling Israeli products, activists with the Free Palestine Campaign are assiduous in their duty to conscience and human rights, of equal committment to base slander, malevolence and malodorous porkies are the management and security of Woodies DIY store, off the Headford Road, Galway, who unfailingly call in the Gardai to get rid of us on spurious and malevolent grounds: that we abuse, swear at and curse their customers, are aggressive towards them, block the entrance to their store and the area, which is a public space for commercial activities, is "private property." read full story / add a comment

...and they are very very angry.

...yes anger, shock, disgust and a determination to respond in some way against the Irish government and Shell.
That was the general feeling of the vast majority of up to 20, 000 people who took a leaflet at the two day public engagement at the GPO.
Many people stopped at the display and engaged with the campaigners. Norwegian, Dutch, Irish, South African, American, with people from all walks of life and many more countries taking the leaflet.

Thanks to everyone that helped out, they were two long days, but they were worth it.

Joe Higgins & the Socialist Party fought Lisbon I, now an MEP he hopes to play an even more crucial role in defeating Lisbon II

Joe Higgins MEP on why he'll be campaigning against the rerun of the Lisbon Treaty and how this provides a real challenge and opportunity for the left.

Less than two weeks after the Euro Election campaign a Euro related charade is about to be visited on the Irish people. We are now being told that the FiannaFail/Green Party Coalition Government will present us with the Lisbon Treaty for a vote in late September or early October as soon as the EU Heads of State agree ‘legal guarantees’ apparently clarifying what the Treaty really means.

Lest anybody forgot, we voted on this Treaty in June of last year and by a convincing majority the Irish electorate rejected it. However, that did not please the Euro elite which was shocked at our insolence in daring to take a view different to what it has determined in our interests. read full story / add a comment

As of 25 minutes a complete list of those states with embassies in Iran who have opened their doors to injured civil rights protesters has become available. So far only the state of Canada has refused to take in the injured from the ongoing serious unrest in the Iranian capital of the last 24 hours during which there have been over 20 confirmed deaths and untold injuries concurrent with the bombing of the Islamic state's founder's tomb.

The Iranian government’s campaign to mold ‘model’ Islamic citizens has not only fashioned a profound crisis of loyalty to the religious ‘ideals of the revolution’, it has nurtured action that many have silently prayed for - as the public sphere, the last bastion of the religious elites grip on power, was shot open by their own guns Sunday. read full story / add a comment
