Yassamine Mather writes on the developing situation in Iran, on howdivisions are developing amongst the Mullahs and most importantly on the class composition of the demonstrations. Full text at link. The problem with most dictators is that, even in their dying days, they believe they can stop the movement by simply passing orders or blaming ‘foreign powers’. Some supporters of the shah are still under the illusion that he was not overthrown by the 1979 Iranian revolution, but was deposed thanks to a plot by Britain and the US. In fact, as he went on speaking, attributing strange comments to Obama (the US president has apparently admitted in public that he had been looking forward to the demonstrations that have rocked Iran), one wondered if Khamenei, well known for using opium as a painkiller for his injured arm, had taken a double dose that morning. read full story / add a comment

For more than a week, Iran has been convulsed by mass demonstrations denouncing election fraud. Hundreds of thousands have repeatedly taken to the streets to denounce the government, which is now threatening, and beginning to carry out, a bloody crackdown. This time around, imperialist intervention is veiled: the White House feigns neutrality, the Western media go all out for the opposition, while in the background various agencies provide vital technical aid. In reality, all candidates in the presidential vote swear allegiance to the Islamic Republic, and the supposed moderate reformers are no less butchers and enemies of poor and working people than the conservative "populist" government. The situation cries out for revolutionary leadership independent of all factions of the theocracy, to wage a struggle for workers revolution against imperialism and clerical reaction. read full story / add a comment ![]()

In a reprise of last year's repeated arrests on the waters of Broadhaven Bay, Shell's Gardai have arrested Pat 'the Chief' O'Donnell and his son Jonathan while they were fishing in Broadhaven Bay this morning. Their two boats were commandeered by Gardai and brought to Ballyglass pier under tow and naval escort. Gardai claim that the two boats were 'loitering', the new term for criminalising fishermen exercising their rights to fish in their native waters. Pat's brother Martin is currently still on the water in the bay fishing in his boat. Meanwhile the Solitaire is less than an hour away from arriving off Glengad. read full story / add a comment

So Sarkozy – and others in the UK – cry ‘Ban the burkha!’ What do they have against it? I picked up a copy of the Daily Express (Wednesday 24th June 2009) which carried the loud headline “Ban the Burkha here in Britain” (all in capitals in the original, of course) with my morning coffee, hoping to shed some light on the answer. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The last few days have seen some very interesting developments in the situation after Pat O'Donnell's boat was sunk. First of all, we had an appeal from Pat for State protection (see below) to the Gardai on Sunday. This was read out in full on local radio on Wednesday, and it went into some other media coverage too. Following on from this, the Gardai called out to Mr. O'Donnell, and asked him what he wanted in terms of protection – his reply was: a 500 metre exclusion zone around his boat, and a Garda RIB to accompany him when he goes out. They agreed to the second one, and didn't really comment on the first(!). Two swimmers were also arrested this evening Wednesday, despite being well outside Shell's so-called exclusion zone. Well, the 200+ Gardai up here have to justify their existence somehow... read full story / add a comment
