The Seomra Spraoi collective refused DIBC permission to use their space citing two political reasons for the refusal. The DIBC wrote to Seomra protesting the refusal and, a month later without reply, posted the letter on Indymedia, where it generated some comment, including one from Mark in which he attacked the publicising of the issue and made a number of allegations against the DIBC. read full story / add a comment

Despite being hugely in debt, removing murals commemorating Cork’s history seems high on the agenda of those in City Hall. That was the message clearly shown when Cork City Council recently removed tributes painted by Ógra Shinn Féin to the former TD and Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney, and the Roll of Honour of Fianna Éireann, Chorcai. read full story / add a comment ![]()

This article analyses the reasons behind the current show trials of dissidents in Iran and argues that no honest rational person should be taken in by the lies of Iranian Regimes. The show trial of August 1 when a number of prominent ‘reformists’ appeared on Iranian state TV to ‘thank their interrogators’ before repenting – was not the first such event in the Islamic republic’s history. Leaders of the ‘official communist’ Tudeh Party were similarly paraded on Iranian TV to denounce their own actions in the 1980s, while in the 1990s we had the trials of ‘rogue’ elements of the ministry of intelligence. read full story / add a comment

Only a few years ago I felt pretty good at geography and potential statehoods when I wrote that the West's sponsorship of Kosovo would logically lead to us thinking about Abkhazia and Ossetia & knowing full well the average reader would have a better idea of where to hunt almasties than point out those two places on a map. It only took a short while for both those latter places to be wrapped up in a short little war between Russia and its southern neighbour Georgia exactly one year ago. Yesterday users of Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal & blogger.com all suffered serious denial of services. Today we learn the cause was a sustained and concentrated attack on the cyber profile of one individual. He or She operates under the name "Cyxymu" which is a dinky phonetic rendering of Sukhumi which we all know is the capital of Abhkazia. read full story / add a comment

The growing ranks of the unemployed are clear testimony to the failure of this Government and its economic strategy. Press Release: 6th August 2009 After cycling through 14 countries and two time zones , four Irish cyclists have now completed their journey of 6000km from Ireland to Gaza only to be turned down at the border. The students, attempted to enter Gaza this morning but even their invitation from the UNRWA [United Nations Relief and Works Agency] didn’t help them. Their 6000km cycle aimed to raise money in support of an emergency appeal to provide for neo-natal care and medical resources for burn victims in Gaza. The initiative came from Eoghan Quinn (21), a type-1 diabetic, after he learned of the restrictions on medical supplies reaching Gaza. [1]. “As a diabetic I am completely dependant on constant access to medicine. I wanted to use my fortunate circumstance to help those cut off from the outside world in Gaza.” read full story / add a comment
