The arrival of CIA torture rendition plane N475LC at Shannon at about 1.20 am this morning was witnessed by Edward horgan, Conor Cregan, and Garda Pat Harte and Garda Karen Fitzgerald, who were watching Cregan and horgan at the time. Immediate requests for this plane to be searched were immediatly refused. Photos of this aircraft taken at Shannon can be found at this web address: http://www.jetphotos.net/showphotos.php?regsearch=N475LC, A google search on N475LC will show up all the information the Gardai need to justify carrying out a search on this plane. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Afghanistan was the first target in 2001 in revenge for the 9/11 attacks on the US. Ireland offered Shannon airport to the US for this attack. The attack on Iraq had no such revenge motivation, just a grab for oil, as recently confirmed by Alan Greenspan, former US Treasury secretary. Ireland has allowed 1 million US troops pass through Shannon since March 2003. Now, Iran is the next likely target, probably within the next few months. Shannon and Irish airspace will again be used in direct and indirect support for any such attack on Iranian nuclear facilties. The fallout once again will be human lives, but this time there will also be nuclear fallout. It is long past the time for action to prevent Ireland's participation in these crimes against humanity. read full story / add a comment ![]()

While journalists writing on the front page of the Irish Times have reproduced the Department of Foreign Affairs' official line that the US military traffic at Shannon is taking place under a mandate from the United Nations, a close look at UN Security Council Resolution 1483 shows that there is more plausibly a mandate for Ireland to opt out of the US war of occupation in Iraq, because this has created conditions of persistent instability and insecurity there. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Please come to Shannon tomorrow 19 May 2007, or any other day of your choice, to protest against the human rights abuses being facilitated on a daily basis at Shannon airport. In January 2006, I formally requested the Irish Human Rights Commission to investigate the use of Shannon airport for the purposes of facilitating the US Rendition for Torture programme and the transit of US troops to unlawful wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. On 17 May 2007, 17 months later, I received a reply from the IHRC saying that they had decided not to investigate any of the issues I had raised with then. The IHRC has just decided that it "was not EXPEDIENT to investigate torture and for the abuse of Shannon airport to facilitate the US war against the peoples of Iraq and Afghanistan. I call on all the Human Rights Commissioners to resign from the Commission because of your failure to investigate the abuses of Shannon airport and Irish territory for the purposes of committing and facilitating gross human rights abuses. read full story / add a comment

Saturday 28 April 2007 was a quiet day at Shannon. Relatively few civilian passengers going through (most civilian customers of Shannon have been attracted to Dublin airport over the past few years). The US military are once again increasing their use or abuse of Shannon airport, in a supposedly neutral state. Three US warplanes were present at Shannon, one North American US troop carrier, one US military executive jet, which could be carrying anyone from a US general guilty of war crimes in Iraq or Afghanistan or prisoners for torture to or from Guantanamo. Now is the time to make Ireland's complicity in crimes against humanity an election issue. read full story / add a comment

At the time of the murder of Rachel Kiely, Ian horgan was sixteen year old boy. He was originally convicted of rape and murder but eventually got imprisoned for manslaughter. A murder conviction would have carried a mandatory life sentence. horgan was due to be released this year but the DPP applied to have the case appealed by the higher courts. The new sentence is a twelve year sentence for rape and man-slaughter (to run concurrently) which taking into account the four years already served means he should be out in a three-five year period. He's very young at twenty three is he not to be doing such heavy time? Is Ireland trying children as adults? read full story / add a comment |
