The international campaign to boycott Coca-Cola scored a first victory in Ireland with the recent succesful passing of a referendum on University College Dublin's Belfield campus to ban the drink from Student Union outlets. The campaign aimed to pressure Coca-Cola into addressing the murder of union activists in its Colombian bottling plants. But now an attempt to repeal the result of the UCD referendum has led to a re-run of the referendum being planned for November 18th (evening) and 19th (all-day). Apparently as a result of the negative publicity around this issue the Coke Company will dispatch a heavy-hitter to Ireland from their head office to try and stop the campaign in its tracks. read full story / add a comment

Despite the shocking history of East Timor and the unncessary massacres that the world's powers facilitated and watched, it's all happening again. Indonesia has brought over 11,000 troops to West Papua (its colony since 1969) in recent months and intimidation, torture and massacres are becoming increasingly common. The official Irish government stance is to respect the sovereignty of Indonesia and hope that dialogue between Indonesia and Papuan 'separatists' can resolve the inevitable turmoil. Ridiculous! read full story / add a comment

The following poem appeared like a light of hope and reality in last Thursday’s Anglo Celt, a conservative Cavan based newspaper. The author, ‘Rhymin’ Simon’ provides a weekly platter of poetry and medicine to those of us who just don’t identify with the usual Fianna Fail shite that local Ireland is forced to digest. All hail Rhymin’ Simon and remember: the smallest candle can drown out all the darkness in the world. Now – get localising! read full story / add a comment
