The Indymedia Ireland feature length documentary on the protests against the G8 in Genoa in July 2001 - Berlusconi's Mousetrap - (at very short notice) will be screened outdoors on a big fuck-off screen in Eyre Square as part of the Galway Film Fleadh on Thursday 10th July at 8pm. No admission fee (obviously). Only found out that this was a goer today so please spread the good word. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday the Salthill airshow came to town bedecked in all its military grandeur. While supposedly billed as an airshow it is in fact a miltary show, which glamourizes the machines of war and desensitizes people to their awful capabilities. read full story / add a comment

The "official" the end of the Iraq war was announced by George "I'll willing to let other people die for my country" Bush weeks back. Someone should tell the Iraqis. Almost every day, the US body count increases and Iraqi resentment and hatred of their "liberators" grows. Pretty much as would be expected, given the real reasons for US intervention. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday night, Scott Ritter the former UN weapons inspector for Iraq spoke to a packed room in the Menlo Park Hotel, Galway, at a meeting hosted by the Galway Alliance Against War. Scott was in Ireland to testify at Mary Kelly's trial, and spoke at length about her actions in disarming a US warplane at Shannon airport, and how he felt more people need to become active citizens, rather than just passive consumers, if we are to make into a reality the notion that both Ireland and America are democratic republics. read full story / add a comment

On the afternoon of 2 July people protesting the conditions at Maghaberry jail took over a sixth floor office at Dundonald House, headquarters of the Prison Services, to draw attention to the worsening situation. Last weekend, prisoners inside the jail protested and 7 prisoners took to the rooftop overnight to protest the lack of segregation in the jail and the new attempt to "double up" loyalist and republican prisoners in the same cell. As a result 4 prisoners have embarked on a no-wash protest. All visits have been suspended in response by the NIO. The protesters at Dundonald House hung banners from the windows and were able to have a spokesperson and relatives of prisoners speak to the number two person in charge of the Prison Services to explain the problems, including the lack of communication to families when they raise their concerns about treatment of their loved ones. The fifth grassroots gathering will take place this weekend, from Friday the 27th of June until Sunday the 29th, in the Teachers club, 36 Parnell Sq. West, Dublin 1. The programme is extensive: 19 workshops, 45 invited speakers, 2 plenary sessions, 10 films, 2 walking tours, 5 physical activities, a social night, a benefit gig and specially featuring 2 invited guests from Argentina's social movements who will be giving two public meetings. This month is the centenary of the birth of George Orwell, author of 1984, Animal Farm and other books like Homage To Catalonia. A report in the Sunday Business Post on April 29th stated that the Starbucks chain of coffee shops intended on opening up several outlets in Ireland. I took a dictaphone out to some independent cafes in Dublin and asked people what they thought about the potential arrival of this cocoa behemoth.
