Berlusconi lost a libel lawsuit against the magazine "The Economist" yesterday in a Milan court which ruled that the the July 2001 issue entitled "Why Silvio Berlusconi is unfit to lead Italy" did not defame him nor was untrue. The minister of the interior in Italy has confirmed that the 3,000 troops stationed on the streets in August to fight migrants will be increased. Below are the key figures so far on how useful Italian paratroop regiments have been in the fight against the gypsy child. There is a brief interview with Mayo fisherman Pat O'Donnell in this weeks An Phoblacht, which outlines the current situation with regard to the 26 county states's deployment of the navy against peaceful protesters, and fishermen going about their business. Jim Moody of the CPGB writes on the likely effects of a ‘pre-emptive’ strike on Irans Natanz fuel enrichment plant. Full text at link. No nuclear explosion, when delivered by bomb or missile, could be contained underground - especially one so large as to ensure complete destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities within mountain tunnels, as well as its earth and concrete protected structures below ground. The Moroccan magazine "L'observateur" published at wonderful story 2 days ago reporting that short but plucky Jose Maria Aznar, (65 years - married - 2 children) former PM of Spain, friend and ally of Bush and rightwing thinktanker is indeed the mystery expectant father to the French minister of Justice, (48 years single) Rachida Dati's, baby. Rachida had announced her surprise pregnancy earlier this week but declined to name the daddy thus sparking speculation. read full story / add a comment

Manchester Pc Daniel Gaffney was jailed today for 12 weeks for assaulting of 12 year old boy in custody. The kid (who can't be named for "protective" reasons) had been arrested at a children's home where he alledgedly had been drinking vodka. PC Gaffney was bringing him to be strip-searched when feeling "intimidated" he hit the boy so hard that a custody sergeant thought his nose was broken. read full story / add a comment

Scenes you won't see on the Irish TV news. Police -many with no visible ID- pepper sprayed and attacked protesters. Nearly 100 arrests were made. Activists (many marching against the Afghan war) claimed that the arrests meant people would be held for the rest of the convention. A senior Russian military analyst warned yesterday that the U.S. and NATO had used the conflict in Georgia as a dress rehearsal for a future military operation in Iran. Col. Gen Leonid Ivashov, president of the Russian Academy of Geopolitical Studies, speaking at a news conference told the Russian news and information agency , Novosti : "We are close to a serious conflict - U.S. and NATO preparations on a strategic scale are ongoing. Amnesty International documents the 20th anniversary of the massacre of prisoners in Iran. It notes that no one has been held accountable for this atrocity. Full text at link. Twenty years after the then Iranian authorities began a wave of largely secret, summary and mass executions in September 1988, Amnesty International renews its call for those responsible for the “prison massacre” to be held accountable. The Iranian Regime has used riot police to attack telecom workers in Shiraz who were on strike due to unpaid wages. Full text at link. The workers of Iran Telecommunications Industry in Shiraz, in southern Iran, have not been paid for five months. The 1200 workers have gathered in front of the Fars province governor general's office many times but no officials have taken any steps to help them or responded to their demands.THings got so bad a worker hanged himself. read full story / add a comment
