When the death of Ruairí Ó Brádaigh was announced to the Irish people and to the world, last Thursday afternoon, we were struck by a deep sense of loss, as with the passing of a father. The affairs that had seemed so important and so pressing that morning were now thought of as work for afterwards. Now was the time to contemplate a great and noble life lived, and the future struggle that he has passed on to us. read full story / add a comment

Here is an interesting arcticle i have found on the scambridge.ie website,i find it interesting how joan burton has massaged figures, and is furiously trying to spin something positive out of job bridge. What could be so positive about robbing what could be a paid job from the poorest of communities, usually the paid work they convert or nullify into unpaid work are of working class and middle class level jobs. IT ROBS WHAT COULD BE A PAID JOB FROM THE COMMUNITY. What is so positive about that? The 38% of interns taken on are not 38% per se,but 25% of that 38%,so there is another shady lie from the minister for ''jobs'' or should i say unemployment? Here is the article below: read full story / add a comment

Never before have so many communities walked in their woods for a common purpose, to focus on their forests on the same day. Adding to the more than 50,000 who have signed our petition against the sale of the harvesting rights to speculators. The Woodland League wish to thank all of the organisers, communities and Individuals who have come together in a show of strength and unity to celebrate Public ownership of their forests. After all these Public forests were created under a Public afforestation plan using Public funding from State and the European Union, planted and managed by Publicly paid foresters, it is therefore obvious, it is to the Public they belong - FULL LIST OF WALKS: http://www.saveourforestsireland.com/p/national-walk-in....html read full story / add a comment

It is no accident that the western world is facing a mental health crisis. Science and technology have brought civilisation to a bold new frontier but many of us are out of sync with the soul. An over emphasis on material growth hasn’t been balanced with the human need for meaning and the desire to be free. It has imprisoned our spirits and left many of us disconnected from our true selves, from each other, and from the natural world around us. read full story / add a comment

Explaining his decision to vote against the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Bill which Minister Howlin introduced as a big stick for the unions whose memberships reject the Haddington Road sell out Joe Higgins TD said: “This bill essentially affords the government as an employer an amount of power over certain public sector employees that no other employer enjoys in law. It is a throwback to the days of William Martin Murphy. “Regardless of the rotten ‘yes’ stand of some union leaders with regard to the Haddington Road Agreement it is a scandal that they and ICTU are either silent on the passing of this oppressive legislation or worse that they use it as a means of scaring their members to voting ‘yes’ to this re-hash of Croke Park 2. “I support the efforts of the No 2 Croke Park 2 campaign in helping co-ordinate the rank and file opposition to this pay deal and to this draconian bill that has been rushed through the Dáil. read full story / add a comment

The CAHWT today responded to a claim by Revenue spokesperson, Vivienne Dempsey, that payment of the property tax is "inevitable". CAHWT spokesperson, Ruth Coppinger, said : "There is nothing inevitable about paying the property tax. People can and will choose to take part in a boycott as a way of exerting political pressure on the government. Hundreds of thousands are likely to take part in an organised boycott of this unjust bondholder tax. Many have simply decided they have no more to give." read full story / add a comment

Historian and peace activist Rosalie Riegle, from Michigan, USA, discusses her latest book on 8 June at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary, Crossing the Line: Nonviolent Resisters Speak Out for Peace, which brings together oral narratives from sixty-five peacemakers who have said no to war-making in the strongest way possible: by engaging in civil disobedience and paying the consequences in jail or prison. Among the riveting narratives in Crossing the Line is the dramatic story of the action and trials of the Shannon Five peace activists who non-violently dismantled a US war plane which had stopped in Ireland on its way to Iraq. At the discussion on 8 June, Rosalie will be joined by Deirdre Clancy, one of the participants in the Shannon action, and together they will describe the action where Deirdre and four others broke into Shannon airport and engaged the US military. read full story / add a comment |
