Hi,

We're launching a new campaign to ensure that a ban on fur farming is included in the upcoming Animal Health & Welfare Bill.

Part of this campaign will include touring the counties that have fur farms - to host awareness days, do leaflet drops, organise meetings with local councillors and TD's, as well as having protests at the actual farms too.

To start things off, we'll be having a simple 'Awareness Day' in Laois, home of Ireland's largest fur farm, Vasa Ltd.

Hi,

On Saturday 10th October, a small group of us will be heading down to Portlaoise, Co. Laois, to leaflet-drop the town about fur farming.

When we're finished there, we'll be going to Stradbally, Co. Laois, for an impromptu protest outside Ireland's largest fur farm (45,000 mink are murdered here every year), Vasa Ltd. read full story / add a comment

In a move which is shocking in its cynicism and casual brutality the HSE in Laois, and I assume nationally, has stopped a free taxi service which had enabled parents with children in foster care to visit their children once a week. This attack on a marginal group with many health and social disadvantages is a clear indication of how theGovt intend to make the poor pay for its recession. The old , the sick and the poor yet again. We must organise to defend basic social services against these slash and burn tactics. read full story / add a comment

From the newswire: €170,000 was the price paid for the house that I am living in, in a new development in Portlaoise. I am not happy to have discovered that European Union (Czech Republic) workers are being paid €3 an hour on the site.

A correspondent reports on the actual employment conditions facing Czech workers in the booming Irish private property construction sector. NOTE: this story has been updated following contact with the developers. See update note and comment below from Mark Conroy read full story / add a comment

Recently I received an email offering me abuse and props for the Shannon Peace Festival from Mark Conroy ( a retired US Marine, not me) who seems to be taking offence at me remarking the the Peace Festival will be, and must be, anti-American as well as anti-Irish government, since it is the American military with the aid of the Irish government who are occupying Iraq and Shannon. Following is his two emails and my two responses. My second response hasn't been replied to. read full story / add a comment
