Three English Catholic Workers were today convicted at Newbury Magistrates Court of Criminal Trespass under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (SOCPA), and Criminal Damage. The convictions follows a protest at the Atomic Weapons Establishment in September 2010 organised by the Catholic Worker. read full story / add a comment

A few months ago the Catholic Worker network in England decided to embark on a series of "Faith and Resistance Retreats" as a basis of nonviolently confronting the war & the war machine and deepening our broader sense of community beyond our specific projects & living/working situations. The first was timed to mark the 30th. anniversary of the original Plowshares 8 action and to nonviolently confront Britain's ongoing production and refinement of nuclear weapons at aldermaston. read full story / add a comment

The Raytheon 9 are an inspiration. I just got a phone call from my friend Les who's trying to get a plane ticket to get to Belfast for the Raytheon 9 trial. Les hasn't been to Northern Ireland since he did three tours with the British military. He says is it is so exciting that socialists and republicans are experimenting with nonviolent direct action and he wants to be there to support them at the trial. He says that this would be a great way for him to return to Northern Ireland - confront his past and celebrate a future with a community in resistance to war. read full story / add a comment

Well apparently they weren't all Grannies, ......but they were definitely ragin' in the best nonviolent sense and it certainly was an interesting demographic that kept knocking on the London Catholic Worker (LCW) door the previous night. Knocking for a meeting that was down at the Catholic Worker cafe. So my humble role of redirecting more militant traffic in the direction of the last fine tuning meeting remained constant. read full story / add a comment

After 3 1/2 years of activism - 3 of which have been spent on bail & in legal jeopardy - Dublin Catholic Worker defendants are taking 6 months off! The length of the legal process, absence form family & friends, limited resources have all taken their toll and demand that most of the defendants have to leave Dublin for a time. We'll be back at the beginning of June organizing around our third trial and in opposition to continued Irish participation in the U.S invasion of Iraq. We are hoping to keep our house going and are wondering if there are any sympathetic folks interested in renting in a shared house with an anti-war orientation and solidarity with the ploughshares defendants. Six ‘Trident Ploughshares’ anti-war activists from Leicester, London and Norwich, who this June entered Burghfield, one of Britain’s WMD bases, and put it out of action for over an hour -- left Reading Magistrates’ Court this afternoon disappointed that the Magistrate had found four of them guilty of criminal damage (the other two had accepted ‘bindovers’ and so the charges against them were dropped), but pleased that their arguments about why their actions were valid under international law were at least heard sympathetically by the Court. read full story / add a comment

The Catholic Worker Movement founded by French soapbox philospher Peter Maurin and New Yorker journalist activist Dorothy Day in NYC in 1933. A radical christian-anarchist-pacifist movement it compromises of approx. 90 autonomous communities in North America, a dozen in Canada, a couple in Mexico and also communites in Brisbane/OZ, Auckland & Christchurch/Aotearoa, Glasgow, London, Oxford, Amsterdam, Dortmund, Hamburg & Dublin. The British Government will go ahead with a planning application next week to construct a massive new nuclear weapons facility at aldermaston in Berkshire. Anti-nuclear campaigners fear it will be used to create a new generation of warheads when the Government is committed by treaty to eliminating our nuclear weapons. read full story / add a comment |
