James Coughlan, the Workers’ Party candidate in Cork North Central has accused Fianna Fáil’s Micheál Martin of trying to sell an impossible dream of home ownership to people on the housing waiting lists which would merely make their situations worst by steering them into the arms of banks and vulture funds. read full story / add a comment

We firmly condemn the escalation of interference and blackmail by the European Union against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, aligned and concerted with the coup operation of «self-proclamation» of a puppet president, orchestrated and commanded by the Trump Administration who, in an arrogant violation of International Law, seeks to overthrow the legitimate President, Nicolás Maduro, elected by popular vote, and subvert the Venezuelan constitutional order. read full story / add a comment

The Workers’ Party has said that the scale of voluntary redundancies announced today (Thursday) by Eir, are further proof of the failure of privatisation in the telecoms sector.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Workers’ Party Cllr. Éilis Ryan said:
“The redundancies at Eir are just further proof that privatisation of Telecom Éireann was only ever about one thing – reducing the quality and number of jobs in the company.

“Eir’s workforce today is around 3,000 workers. This is less than a quarter of Telecom Éireann’s pre-privatisation workforce. A public utility was privatised for the profit of others, and workers’ jobs were decimated as a result.” read full story / add a comment

Apple revenue could build 72,000 houses in Ireland

Workers’ Party councillor Ted Tynan has said that it is time to replace two decades of lip-service on hospital overcrowding with immediate action to end the scandal of sick patients lying on trolleys in hospital corridors and wards.

Cllr. Tynan said that the hospital trolley crisis, like the Winter Vomiting bug, had become an annual fixture and the stock answer from both the government and the HSE that it was a temporary crisis was an insult to the patients involved and their families. read full story / add a comment

With the stepping down of Hosni Mubarak under the crushing pressure of the revolution, people of Egypt have achieved their first goal. A dictator, who for nearly thirty years had made life hell for people in a country run on the model of market economy capitalism with the full political and military backing of the USA and other western governments, was forced to resign. Eighteen days of people’s massive protests in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and other cities, their smart and brave confrontation with all the regime’s vicious ploys, and the workers’ massive strikes finally brought Mubarak to his knees and forced him to flee. read full story / add a comment

The democratic aspirations of the Nepalese people have been betrayed by the current regime. It is no longer possible for the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist)-CPN (M)- to remain in government. This government was formed under the premiership of Nepal Congress leader Koirala. It was set up following the struggle against Nepal's autocratic monarchy in April 2006. This government, which included Nepal's eight main parties, was meant to hold elections to a Constituent Assembly. However, the continued existence of the monarchy is putting these elections under serious threat. The monarchy is spreading violence and disorder, in order to undermine democracy. The continuing failure of the government to declare a republic has left the Maoists with no choice but to declare a nation-wide people's movement to fight for a republic and the other just and democratic demands of the people, from the streets.

Paul Foot, who died last weekend, was one of the greatest socialist writers and orators of his generation, who inspired thousands of activists from the time he became a socialist in the early 1960s until the last week of his life. He was also a celebrated campaigning journalist, who supported workers in struggle and took up cases of wrongful imprisonment, bringing about the resignation of a Tory home secretary and helping to free many innocent people from jail.

Here are a few links to obituaries and appreciations of Paul. read full story / add a comment

BERLIN, July 2 2003 Martin Schulz, German Socialist questioned Silvio Berlusconi’s suitability for his new post.
The German legislator specifically raised Mr. Berlusconi's sponsorship of a new immunity law in Italy at a time when he is on trial in Milan on bribery charges.

"Mr. Schulz," Mr. Berlusconi said in reply, cocking his head to one side and smiling, "I know there is a man in Italy producing a film on the Nazi concentration camps. I would like to suggest you for the role of leader. You would be perfect."

Can someone please shed light on how this man has managed to not only become the Italian Prime Minister but also for some bizarre reason now holds the Rotating Presidency of the European Union? read full story / add a comment

40 years ago on May 1st, 1963, the Indonesian flag was raised over West Papua, marking the annexation of West Papua and the brutal suppression of a nation. Formerly run by the Netherlands and for seven months by the United Nations, the world community turned a blind eye as the West Papuans were sacrificed to the interests of “real-politik” and corporate greed. The question of West Papua is unfinished business for both the United Nations and the Netherlands. The Netherlands continues to be silent on the on-going genocide in West Papua, as it seeks to maintain “cordial” political and economic relations with its former colony, Indonesia. read full story / add a comment
