Michael Moore's important new film 'Planet of Humans' has given shape to suspicions that I and many others have had about the burgeoning green movement and what is driving it's sudden popularity across the spectrum, despite all the years "in the wilderness" when old school green activists were pariahs. Of course It's the usual reason as we suspected: i.e. corporate PROFIT! WATCH THIS MOVIE!! read full story / add a comment ![]()

The victims of Abu Ghraib torture sued, in a US court, the private company, CACI, hired to do the torturing. They lost. Brazenly CACI counter sued the victims in the same court and WON. The Abu Ghraib victims now have to pay their torturers 14,000 dollars in costs. Ridiculous! read full story / add a comment ![]()

Apple claim to have negotiated an agreement with the Irish government whereby they paid 2% tax or less. In this time of deep austerity, it's time to kick out these US tax dodgers and instead focus on giving support to indigenous small businesses. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Clearly, the usual suspects are using this totally hyped media trial to get the dig they promised in at Russia after it didn't play ball regarding Assad in Syria. Apparently even RTE has it's instructions to do a hatchet job. You have to laugh at our own extended segment RTE propaganda tour de force on last nights "prime time". It's quite funny to hear everyone saying "pussy" with a straight face on prime time catholic Ireland TV. Don't they realise it's NOT tiddles the cat we're talking about here! ;-) read full story / add a comment ![]()

Abstract: For most progressive activists, it is a given that the military-industrial
complex is a clear and highly visible barrier to progressive social change. So it is particularly interesting to note that a number of groups involved in progressive activist education – which are held in high regard by activists – maintain strong links to military and political elites. One of the best known of these organisations is the US-based Albert Einstein Institution. This paper will provide a systematic analysis of the history of this Institution, and the key people associated with it, and demonstrate how their work is intimately linked to the international democracy-manipulating community – whose work is exemplified by the US-based National Endowment for Democracy, a group which is well-known for its support of the failed 2002 coup in Venezuela. This analysis will expose the crucial role such activist educators play in catalysing revolutions in countries deemed appropriative for regime change by transnational elites. In the light of the dubious nature of these educational activities, this paper will conclude by offering a number of suggestions for how concerned citizens and educators may counter the cynical (ab)use of activist education by political elites as a new and powerful tool of imperialism. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Cutting rent supplement has allowed the FG/Labour government to continue to make large cuts to the social welfare budget whilst claiming not to be touching "basic social welfare rates". The reality is that because it is left to tenants to negotiate with their landlords for a rent reduction, rather than such negotiations being undertaken by the department itself, this is rather like David negotiating with goliath and the tenant inevitably has to pay the not inconsiderable difference out of their already reduced social welfare payment. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Western forces shot dead 16 civilians including nine children in southern Kandahar province on Sunday, Afghan officials said, in a rampage that witnesses said was carried out by American soldiers who were laughing and appeared drunk. Media are trying to spin the incident and limit the damage by claiming just one soldier was responsible. The old "one bad apple" excuse. But The whole corrupt applecart is in danger of being overturned as a result of this latest atrocity, in the wake of the "Koran burning" incident which so far has led to 23 deaths (guardian) read full story / add a comment

At a meeting held in Dublin last Sunday, 24th October, involving the People Before Profit Alliance, the Socialist Party, the Tipperary Workers and Unemployed Grou, and Cllr Declan Bree and his local group in Sligo, a historic decision was taken to establish a left alliance to contest the next general election and to take the first steps towards a new, left, anti capitalist formation to represent working people. read full story / add a comment ![]()
