If Bradley Manning showed the U.S. Military’s indifference to arbitrary slaughter by U.S. personnel well that is how the Old Testament lays out the ground rules in the Middle East—it is NOT the Pentagon’s fault the New Testament had some other ideals that claimed all of mankind was part of God’s family. Still it seems apparent why there was so much adamant secrecy about sharing God’s State secrets—since it seems kind of obvious Eden was not the psychological paradise it was purported to have been by the propaganda powers-that-be back then. More importantly despite there being religious precepts too often leaders of countries do whatever they want irrespective of what legal or moral codes should apply—and this goes for both Israel and the United States—so maybe the the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is that leaders can act like arbitrary Gods while expecting their subjects to follow rules? read full story / add a comment

Another thread speculated that recent attacks on RTE by the Sunday Independent were due to a generalised attack on the public sector, on relatively independent journalism in the publicly owned RTE during a period of recession, on disappointment at the election of Michael D Higgins and defeat for the right wing entrepreneur, Sean Gallagher (and the part played by RTE in exposing Gallagher). That story is here: Sunday Independent that defended Bertie Ahern - on anti RTE, President Michael D Higgins, crusade http://www.indymedia.ie/article/101574 There could be more to it than that. read full story / add a comment

Following his Requisition for a Sworn Publin Enquiry into Corruption in Ireland on the 28 Jan 2012 Daniel Doherty was jailed on the 24 Feb 2012, once again without any summons or court hearing. This has happened to him on at least 7 occasions and has been done to keep him quiet. Minister Shatter you have a lot of work to do to clear up the corruption in the legal and justice system. It is simply not good enough. read full story / add a comment

Cartoons have become explosive, underlining deep political fault lines in the new world order and more often than not, concealing bigotry and diverting debate from racism and imperialism to the much abused concept of “freedom of expression”. The latest episode was started by a cartoon published in Ha’aretz in which the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Minister of Defence Ehud Barak, say farewell to troops on the way to bomb Iran, while asking them to bomb the UNESCO offices in Ramallah on the way back. read full story / add a comment

Eoghan Harris destroyed Gay Mitchell's campaign by advising him to launch a reactionary blueshirt assault on Martin McGuinness. See:
Gay Blueshirt Mitchell becomes Eoghan Harris's candidate http://www.indymedia.ie/article/100648 Never a man to allow sentiment to delay him, Harris switched at the last minute to the one reactionary he thought would win, Sean Gallagher. Just like in 1997 when 'tribal time bomb' Mary McAleese won, the Harris touch turned to dust. Higgins will win and Martin McGuinness will elect him on transfers - the worst of all Harris worlds. Higgins lifted Section 31 censorship restrictions on Sinn Fein in 1994 and paved the way for the peace process and Sinn Fein electoral advance. Harris hated all of that. read full story / add a comment

A Labour party councillor has attacked a group for picketing the clinic of a Fianna Fail TD. Cllr Aodhan Ó Riordain said that in his view, pickets held outside the clinics of Fianna Fail public representatives are not a legitimate form of protest. This article looks at the EU intervention in Chad and argues that it is driven by the desire of the French government to shore up a dictator. The EU operation, which includes some 400 Irish troops, is essentially a fig leaf for the promotion of the foreign policy interests of the French state. The mainstream media ignores the geopolitical realities of this and other such interventions in Africa and thus ignores the potential negative consequences - for both Africans and Europeans. read full story / add a comment

Opponents of the Lisbon Treaty claim that Ireland will become part of a Pan-European Army. However their hysteria betrays a profound ignorance of our military weaknesses and indeed the military weakness of the European armies even the big three, German, France and the United Kingdom. None of the European armies shows any likelihood of being able to overcome nationalistic rivalries, duplication of resources, linguistic difficulties and a plethora of different weapons systems that would make a Pan-European army exist anywhere except in the fantasies of Brussels bureacrats even if a common defence treaty is made official. read full story / add a comment
