Last Sunday in solidarity with the people of rossport, Ógra Shinn Féin held a protest outside the offices of Statoil Ireland in Dublin. The protest was to highlight the continue involvement of Statoil, a Norwegian state industry, in the theft of Irish natural resources and endangerment of the rossport community, through dirty deals with Shell and the 26 county government.

Paul Murphy, Socialist Party (CWI in Ireland), Dublin

A member of the Socialist Party, Darren Cogavin, and one other student, Enda Duffy, are due to meet the Vice President for Students at University College Dublin (UCD), Dr. Martin Butler, in the next week. They face punishment for engaging in a peaceful protest against the giant corporation Shell and the Green Party Minister for Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan. Two protests, organised by the campaign ‘Shell to Sea’, took place on 30 October in UCD, the biggest college in Dublin. They were opposing the giveaway of over 50 billion euro worth of gas for free by the Irish government to Shell, and the building of an unsafe onshore pipeline and refinery by Shell in rossport, Co. Mayo, on Ireland’s west coast.

Cork S2S activists and supporters will be travelling to Mayo this Friday to take part in the National Day of Protest called by the community campaign in Erris. Once again, Shell to Sea campaigners and supporters will be showing solidarity with and lending their numbers to the ongoing protest by the local community. For seven years now concerned local citizens have opposed the unsafe and unprecedented Corrib Gas project, and they have had the broad support of the community for most of this time. Excepting those few individuals whose business interests have been co-opted by Shell et al, the community’s support for the Shell to Sea campaign endures, and has even deepened. read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea Event at Norwegian Parade Next Thursday MAY 17th, 10.45AM, Trinity College Dublin

Every year the Norwegian Community in Ireland have a parade through the streets of Dublin to celebrate their national day. It's becoming traditional now for activists from the Shell to Sea campaign to join in, and point out how the government of Norway are doing a much better job of looking after the interests of their citizens than our representatives are looking after us.

Through ownership of Statoil, the Norwegian people will own 25% of Corrib gas. The people of Ireland will gain nothing. read full story / add a comment

EcoSoc Presents... April 10th O’Flaherty Theatre, Nuig Galway. Addmision Free.

Film Premiere and Speaking tour :
Mumia Abu Jamal is an award-winning journalist who was charged on July 4th 1982 with the killing of a white police officer. He was convicted of the crime in a deeply flawed trial. The presiding judge held the record number of death row convictions, in the state. Many of these convictions were later overturned as blatant anti-black bias was found in many of his decisions. However the Mumia case was not overturned, the reopening of the case would have discredited the entire justice system.
The evening’s events will include talks by a delegation of top-level African American activists. They are in Galway as part of a world tour aimed at raising awareness about the miscarriages of justice, which have placed political prisoners on death row in the USA.

How can we stop our corrupt governance from destroying our unique heritage that is the Gaelic Celtic Royal City of Tara? Nice letters to the corrupt media? Answering Pat Kenny's questions - do you live on Tara? By asking Meath Co Co to stop the NRA? By telling everyone that the forced double troll road will not fix the designed transport problem? Protests? Listening to unqualified sham lawyers? Signing petitions? I dont think so - the corrupt governance of this country is steered by the most devious of them all - bad bertie and he only listens to bad bad bush. read full story / add a comment

Last friday's events in rossport were a clear example of the brutality of the state; non-violent protesters were viciously assaulted with fists, boots and batons. It is important to remember however, that these events are part of the same logic that saw five men imprisoned for 92 days last year for refusing to allow Shell to construct a dangerous pipeline through their land. read full story / add a comment

The workers Solidarity Movement held its Autumn 2006 National conference in Seomra Spraoi, a social centre in Dublin. The conference saw around two thirds of the membership attending with greetings sent from our comrades involved in the struggle in rossport.
National Conference opens with questioning the reports given by various office holders, editorial committees etc. A summary of these reports follows - quite a lot of details and indeed areas involving relationships with other groups have been removed, as these were not written for public consumption. read full story / add a comment
