2008 has seen a crisis of capitalism not seen since the 1930’s. The workings of the market, once universally worshipped, have imploded and are wrecking people’s lives across the globe. Alongside this, the so called “war on terror” pursued by the same market fundamentalists, has brought death and havoc in Iraq and now, in Afghanistan, it threatens to spill over to new and deadlier frontiers. The Irish winners of a Europe-wide Journalism competition have been announced. David Lynch, formerly of Daily Ireland and now working as a freelance journalist has been declared the national winner of the ‘For Diversity. Against Discrimination’ Journalism Award and Maria Moynihan of the Irish Farmers Journal was announced as the winner in the Young Journalist Category. The Awards are now in the 4th year and previous winners have included Carl O’Brien on the Irish Times and Fiona Ness of the Sunday Business Post. Labour Youth is organising a weekend of debate and discussion marking the 90th anniversary of the death of Labour founder James Connolly. The Connolly Festival takes place this evening and all-day tomorrow (Friday and Saturday) in the Teachers Club, Parnell Square, Dublin 1. The Connolly Festival is opening tonight at 8pm with a discussion on advancing the campaign for same sex marriage. Speakers tonight include Marie Mulholand who chaired the Irish Council for Civil Liberties working group on civil partnerships and Rachel Mathews Mc Kay, Co-Chair of the Labour Party’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) group. read full story / add a comment

Anti-War Ireland, a broad-based national alliance of anti-war groups, is organising the demonstration that will meet George W. Bush when he lands at Shannon airport on Friday evening, June 25th. This demonstration will assemble at 7pm in Shannon town centre before marching to the airport. Anti-War Ireland is also conjointly organising, with AmBush2004 (a coalition of grassroots groups), a parade for peace from Bunratty to Shannon the following day. Assembing at 12pm. Anti-War Ireland has appointed the following media panel for the Bush protests. These individuals are willing to do media interviews on behalf of Anti-War Ireland to explain the reasons for the protests, which revolve around our opposition to Bush's aggressive foreign policy and the military misuse of Shannon airport. read full story / add a comment
