The Citizens’ Assembly on abortion rights was set up under pressure from the Repeal movement. It surprised the conservative Dáil when it recommended that women and pregnant people be trusted – that abortion should be legalised upon request up to 12 weeks; for socio-economic reasons up to 22 weeks; for health; and for fatal foetal abnormality. But how will these ever get implemented given that the Dáil parties have an extremely limited position on abortion that is way behind the public? Only Solidarity-People Before Profit and a few independents are pro-choice in line with the Citizens’ Assembly. read full story / add a comment

In the early hours of Thursday morning, feminist pro-choice activists Díobháil (Bíonn Díobháil a dhéanamh againn: We make mischief) struck again and dropped a banner from Galway Cathedral stating “Repeal the 8th - Free, Safe, Legal” demanding access to abortion. For too long the Church and the State have controlled our bodies and our choices. It is time to finally end the unholy alliance of Church and State. While Díobháil respects peoples’ personal religious beliefs, these should not be imposed on others, and vast majority of people in Ireland agree. Let us not forget, St. Brigid was our first abortionist, and this is why we demand “Take your rosaries off our ovaries!” read full story / add a comment

It has been almost twelve years since the Genoa G8 2001 summit demonstrations descended into a Dantes hell for both sides. amnesty itself has said of Genoa that there was ‘the biggest suspension of democratic rights in a western country since WW2’. Tony Greenstein circulated this release. He writes: The Freedom Theatre in Jenin, a symbol of Palestinian culture, saw its artistic director, Juliano Meir-Khamis murdered by unknown assassins last year. Almost certainly the work of Israel and PA, both have used the murder to further harass the Freedom Theatre. Zubeidi has been imprisoned, without trial for nearly 4 months by the Israeli owned and funded quisling Palestinian Authority of Abbas. This is the context in which a cultural boycott of Israel is being advocated in Britain against groups like Batsheva. Please act on this appeal. On the 9th of September Zakaria Zubeidi announced that he will embark on a death fast, a complete food and fluid strike, in response to the continuous postponement of his release from Palestinian Authority prison. This effectively means that unless the Palestinian Authority releases Zakaria he will most probably not make it through the week. read full story / add a comment

The Israeli authorities must cease the practice of holding individuals in administrative detention, and ensure Palestinians in their custody are not subjected to ill-treatment and have access to adequate medical care when needed. Ann Harrison, Deputy Middle East and North Africa Director at amnesty International. The expected release of Palestinian Khader Adnan after four months in Israeli custody without charge or trial coincides with a mass prisoner hunger strike which amnesty International says demonstrates anger over administrative detention and prison conditions. Adnan, a 34-year old baker allegedly linked to Islamic Jihad, is due to be released in a deal between his lawyers and the Israeli authorities in February in which he agreed to end his 66-day hunger strike protesting at his administrative detention and ill-treatment. On Saturday October 15th the SpunOut.ie National Youth Organisation, in association with Dublin Contemporary, will bring together 200 young people for a youth focused forum with the 2011 Presidential candidates. The event will give the candidates a unique opportunity to discuss with the younger generation why they should vote for them. It will also provide a chance for the candidates to hear young people’s opinions and answer their questions directly. For Immediate Publication. This is the second year that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presence at the UN is causing a storm of international protests. Last year, it was primarily due to Neda Agha-Soltan’s murder in broad daylight at a Tehran protest and this year it is the Iran stoning case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. Last year, under public pressure, Ahmadinejad outrageously declared that Neda had been killed by protestors rather than the regime’s own security forces. This year, he has outrageously announced that Sakineh was never sentenced to death by stoning. The reason for his absurd claim is not that there is any truth in it but because of the massive international protest movement against stoning and executions in Iran led by the International Committee against Stoning and the International Committee against Execution. read full story / add a comment

Instead of being released Mansour Osanloo has been sentenced to a further year in prison. Reza Shahabi was arrested and is held incommunicado. The long night of repression for Iranian Trade Unionists continues. But you can act and make a difference. Send the sample letter at the end of this article to address' provided. Mansour Osanloo, president of the board of directors of the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company (a public transit company owned by Tehran Municipal government with about 17000 employees) has been sentenced this week to one year imprisonment by the City of Karaj Islamic Revolutionary Court for "propaganda against the system". Mr. Osanloo has been subject to increasing harassment in recent months and was put on trial recently at Karaj Revolutionary court. Osanloo had also been charged with "connection with the opponents of the system". He has gone through all this in recent months while he has been in prison for the past three years. read full story / add a comment

Iran's Supreme Court has rejected Ja'far Kazemi's request to appeal against his death sentence. The sentence was imposed for his alleged participation in anti-government demonstrations and links with a banned organization. His sentence may be carried out at any time. Six other people with alleged links to the same organization are said to be under sentence of death. Ja'far Kazemi was arrested on 18 September 2009 and interrogated and possibly tortured for months in Evin prison in Tehran. He was accused of participating in protests which followed the disputed outcome of Iran's presidential election in June 2009, but was not accused of committing any violent acts; and for his alleged contact with banned opposition group the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI). He was sentenced to death for "enmity against God", and is also believed to have been convicted of "propaganda against the system". On 26 April, he learned that his death sentence had been confirmed by an appeal court. A further appeal was apparently rejected in late July read full story / add a comment |
