For 20 days now, while most of the world has looked on in dumb silence, the city of Bani Walid, in Libya, has been under indiscriminate shelling from Misrata militias, nominally loyal to the NATO imposed National Transitional Council (NTC.) These are the very same Misrata militias who dubbed themselves "The Brigades for the Elimination of Black Skins," as they ethnically cleansed 40,000 Black inhabitants from the city of Tawarga - again with the silent complicity of most of the Western media and political parties, including, shamefully, the parties of the Left. read full story / add a comment

73 people detained at Immigration Detentions Centres in Bialystok, Biala Podlaska, Przemysl and Leszowola decided on beginning a hunger strike together. It is not the first protest of detained refugees, but for the first time information about a strike reaches the public. In the past, strikers had been put in isolation and punished in various ways, while the public knew nothing about it. Detainees’ demands include: right to information in a language they comprehend, right to contact the outside world, right to proper healthcare, education for underage detainees, respect for children’s rights, improvement in social conditions within detention centres, end to abuse and to excessive violence, end to criminalizing detainees. Refugees decided to strike together, in all Polish Detention Centres, wishing that their voice will not be ignored nor quenched by the centres’ authorities. read full story / add a comment

In recent days a number of Dublin South Central TDs have claimed that anti-austerity protesters are not representative of the people of Ballyfermot. These same TDs, Fine Gael’s Catherine Byrne, and Eric Byrne and Michael Conaghan of Labour, claim to represent Ballyfermot, yet they have consistently voted against the interests of local residents by supporting ‘slash and burn’ cuts to our community. He writes: The Freedom Theatre in Jenin, a symbol of Palestinian culture, saw its artistic director, Juliano Meir-Khamis murdered by unknown assassins last year. Almost certainly the work of Israel and PA, both have used the murder to further harass the Freedom Theatre. Zubeidi has been imprisoned, without trial for nearly 4 months by the Israeli owned and funded quisling Palestinian Authority of Abbas. This is the context in which a cultural boycott of Israel is being advocated in Britain against groups like Batsheva. Please act on this appeal. On the 9th of September Zakaria Zubeidi announced that he will embark on a death fast, a complete food and fluid strike, in response to the continuous postponement of his release from Palestinian Authority prison. Despite Western hypocritical attacks on Political Islam, the true enemies of Zionism and the Israeli state have always been secular and radical Palestinian and Arab nationalism. The Muslim Brotherhood have often provided a cover for imperialism, as in Egypt. In Gaza, where the PFLP is strong, Israel prefers Hamas to a secular regime (unless of the quisling Abbas type). Ahmad Sa’adat was kidnapped from Jericho Prison, where he was held under guard by British and foreign forces and effectively handed over to Israel. He was imprisoned for being leader of a group which assassinated the leader of the Moledet-Transfer Party, General Rehavam Zvi. Targeted assassinations are regular Israeli activities but the oppressed are not supposed to indulge in similar actions. Ahmad Sa’dat’s statement below on how negotiations only serve as a camouflage for occupation and conquest are a message for all Palestinian groups and those in the West who choose, despite the evidence, to foster such illusions. read full story / add a comment

The Mahon tribunal revelations were only the tip of the iceberg and did nothing to resolve some serious issues. The Iran Tribunal - convened to put the Tehran regime in the dock for its massacre of 5,000-10,000 political prisoners in 1988 - took place in London over June 18-22. While it largely went unnoticed by the public in Britain, it caused uproar amongst sections of the Iranian left. The tribunal was not the first well-financed attempt to divert the genuine anger of the Iranian people, and their hatred of the Islamic regime (in its many factions), towards dubious ends. Similar stunts have taken place before under the auspices of so-called NGOs - which turn out to be little more than fronts for the United States and the European Union. read full story / add a comment |
