international / anti-war / imperialism / press release Monday May 02, 2011 14:13 by HOPI
Over the last year workers in Iran have struggled on several fronts. The subsidy cuts coupled with the crisis in world capitalism are driving living standards down for the majority of Iranians. Basic food stuffs are rising in price at a phenomenal rate, with bread rising a massive 25% and unsubsidised fuel increasing 7 fold. This is in a country with the third largest oil reserves in the world and the necessary refining abilities to produce cheap and affordable fuel for the entire population. The sanctions regime continues to undermine Iranian industry, robbing many workers of their jobs whilst the elite continue to amass great wealth. We stand with the Iranian working class fighting austerity and call for an end to all sanctions. We also call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners. read full story / add a comment ![]()

international / anti-capitalism / press release Sunday February 13, 2011 19:01 by WPI
With the stepping down of Hosni Mubarak under the crushing pressure of the revolution, people of Egypt have achieved their first goal. A dictator, who for nearly thirty years had made life hell for people in a country run on the model of market economy capitalism with the full political and military backing of the USA and other western governments, was forced to resign. Eighteen days of people’s massive protests in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and other cities, their smart and brave confrontation with all the regime’s vicious ploys, and the workers’ massive strikes finally brought Mubarak to his knees and forced him to flee. read full story / add a comment ![]()

national / sci-tech / press release Tuesday April 20, 2010 11:08 by Pirate Party Ireland

The Pirate Party of Ireland was disheartened to learn that the government is currently in the planning stages of establishing arbitrary internet censorship. What form this censorship will take when it is finally rolled out is quite opaque, but it would most certainly result in the blocking of many websites. Such a system will be ineffective in its goals, produce perverse effects, impose substantial costs, and reduce freedom of speech. read full story / add a comment

Responsibility for domestic pet animals does not lie within the sphere of responsibility of any Government department. Senator Jim Higgins raised the issue with the Minister for Agricultue and Food, Deputy Mary Coughlan at the request of Anvil Ireland. In her letter to Senator Higgins Minister Coughlan states " The position as regards my Department is that its statutory responsibility relates only to the welfare and protection of farmed animals and does not extend to animals kept as pets. I understand that the matter of ratification of the European Convention for the Protection of Pets and the responsibility of Departments is under consideration". I have tabled a question to the European Commission pointing out that as of now no Irish Government Department has responsibility for pets and urging the Commission to insist that responsibility he assigned to a particular Department without further delay. read full story / add a comment

I. Introduction: This report is not constitutionally required of any non-sabbatical member of the Union Executive. I have compiled as an example of how easy it is to comply with the wishes of those students who proposed the draft Union constitutions of February 2004 and February 2005. These documents both contained the proposal for each member of the Union Executive to produce an end of year report which would include a continuity section to as a written guide of action for their successors. I hope that this report serves a guide or small piece of insight for all those contemplating involvement in an official capacity in the UCD STudents' Union Executive. read full story / add a comment
