In February, the WSM continued its series of public meetings about why capitalism is in crisis and why working people should refuse to make sacrifices to benefit the rich. Limerick and Bray were the latest. We will be continuing our efforts to spread anarchist ideas in this vein over the coming months, with meetings planned for Drogheda, Galway, Derry, Navan, Tralee, Tipperary and Ballina. AIMSI welcome the publication of the Independent Review of Maternity & Gynaecology Services in the Greater Dublin Area. In particular we welcome the recommendation for increased choice for women regarding models of care and the recognition that there is considerable evidence for the development of midwifery led units. We agree with the finding that the GDA is out of step in being able to offer a woman-centred service, providing choice and access to services .We share the belief that the GDA needs to place much more emphasis on community based maternity services, as 60% of women will experience a normal birth. read full story / add a comment

Cork is biting back at the recession with a new web-started community which aims to get us outside working together to grow our own food. Cork Food Web imagines a network of community gardens, allotments, urban and rural farms and food parks all over Cork city and county run autonomously by local communities and linked by the shared need to feed ourselves and mind our environment. The website is a ‘social networking site’ so allows users to create their own profile, get to know each other and form groups. In just a few months of existence membership has grown to 154, with members from the city and all across Cork county forming online interest groups, exchanging information and skills and creating events together. read full story / add a comment

It is now crystal clear that the government will attempt to bring in some form of student fees (quite possibly from Sept 09). Batt O'Keeffe has indicated that he will bring such a proposal to the cabinet towards the start of April. Therefore, the building of a movement of students, linking up with college workers and school students, is essential if we want to defeat this plan and maintain a right to free fees. read full story / add a comment

Every area of business is getting in on the act: targetting students, that captive audience of impressionables. In this latest attempt, AIB asks students to build a bank in their school, and of course AIB will give the students all the help they need. The National Chairperson of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement Francie Mackey has again highlighted and praised the efforts of all republican , socialist and progressive groups for their contribution to the temporary defeat of the EU Treaty in last Years referendum . However the apparent refusal of the national and intrnational capitalist elites to accept that popular decision and the increasing likelihood of their pushing ahead with a second referendum on the same Treaty in the upcoming year leaves all of us who opposed the Treaty on the grounds of national sovereignty , neutrality and principled socialist concerns with a common purpose . The Communist Organization of Greece (KOE) salutes the dozens of thousands of youth and people who continue, for the third consecutive day, the resolute and combative demonstrations against the government and the police murder. At this moment (morning of Monday 8 December) thousands of school pupils are demonstrating in front of the Athens Police General Headquarters, as well as in many neighborhoods of Athens and all over Greece. This afternoon the Coalition of Radical Left (SYRIZA) and other left organizations call for big popular demonstrations in the centre of Athens and in many other cities. Even the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), which until now made nothing and did not participate in any protest, now feels the pressure and the anger of the youth and of the popular masses and calls for a (separate, as always…) meeting in Athens. read full story / add a comment

The Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services - Ireland (AIMSI) is a national non-profit organisation which offers support services and lobbies for changes in the Irish Maternity System. AIMSI's regional chapters of AIMSI Northeast , AIMSI Mid-Leinster , and AIMSI West have publicly called for Consumer Groups to be implemented in the 3 Dublin Maternity Hospitals and Galway's UCHG in order to better assist communications between hospital management, staff, and consumers. read full story / add a comment |
