The Irish Penal Reform Trust has questioned why Justice Minister McDowell is privatising the prisoner escort service when a report produced by his own Department found that “privatisation of prisoner escorts is not a viable option”. The IPRT further asked on what basis the Minister has made this decision when he himself admits, “no detailed research was undertaken into the experience of privatised prisoner transport in other jurisdictions.” read full story / add a comment

On Tuesday 4 November 2003, the United Nations voted for the twelfth consecutive time to oppose the US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba. This year a record 179 countries (including Ireland and Britain) voted against the blockade, with only the US, Israel and the Marshall Islands supporting its continuation. The illegal, unjust and immoral blockade of Cuba by the US continues to create huge shortages and hardship for the Cuban people and must be lifted. Given increased threats from the US, including the real possibility of military invasion, a recent tightening of the blockade by George W. Bush (despite Congressional opposition) and increased hostility towards Cuba by the EU, international support for the Cuban Revolution and the country's right to national self-determination free from US interference has never been greater. The US government must be made to listen and act on the democratic and moral will of the United Nations. read full story / add a comment

In a statement today ictu caused further damage to the anti bin tax movement by restating the position of the GS David Begs on 25 September. The knife went in further when ictu failed to call for the release of the prisoners and called for the campaign to halt effective action, a tactic that would bring the heroic resistance to the bin tax to an end. ictu appears to have lost all contact with union members. It is time we took back our unions. read full story / add a comment

-There should be no exemptions from the tax for the large polluters. There have been proposals that the biggest polluters should be exempted from the tax in order to protect their economic position. This would lead to a greater burden on all other economic sectors and consumers. It would both be unfair and lead to higher emissions than would be achieved on a level playing pitch. -Poorer households must be compensated. Because poorer households spend a higher percentage of their income on energy than wealthier households, they must be compensated. This should be through changes to the social welfare and tax systems and investment in insulation and other energy efficiency measures. -Money raised should be used to fund a transfer to a low-carbon economy. A substantial part of the money raised should be used in a decarbonisation fund, to bring about a rapid change to a more energy-efficient, renewables-based economy. read full story / add a comment
