One of Ireland’s youngest councillor’s Johnny McGibbon has today signalled the beginning of a major recruitment drive for Sinn Féin. In keeping with the Valentine’s Day spirit, the 21 year old elected activist is urging a simple message, ‘If you love Ireland, Join Sinn Féin.’ His words came as Ógra Shinn Féin activists distributed thousands of ‘I ♥ Ireland’ stickers across Ireland today. The Irish Film Institute is screening an award-winning film, initially banned in its native Sri Lanka, on the grounds that it demoralises the military and is a threat to national security. Purahanda Kaluwara (Death on a Full Moon Day) deals with the human fallout of the ongoing conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers. Directed by Prassanna Vithanage, it won the prestigious Grand Prix at the Amiens Film Festival and has become one of the most successful films in Sri Lanka?s 50-year cinema history. read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin recently launched a film at a Basque/Irish Night in Conway Mill Belfast. The film explores the cultural, social and political realities in the Basque country and looks at the current struggle for independence. Yesterday evening, the Galway Bin Charges Campaign comprising outraged members of the public, activists from the SWP, SP, Sinn Fein and Galway Alliance Against War vented their anger outside and inside Galway City Council buildings against a proposal that, if adopted, would amount to a front frontal assault on the city's poor, thankfully, conscience prevailed, as such, GBCC wholeheartedly applaudes the city councillors for successfully defending the full waiver on refuse charges at the Budget 2008 meeting on Monday night. Workers employed by the United Bus Company of Tehran (Sharekat-e Vahed) were arrested and detained in Evin prison in an attempt to prevent a strike. The workers are demanding a pay rise, collective bargaining, recognition of their union and the release of their union’s president. 12 leading members of the Union of Workers of the Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company were arrested following their fight for better pay and working conditions.
