Brian Cowen and Brian Lenihan where out on the streets of Dublin today (Wednesday 1 April) reassuring citizens that the ‘economy was fixed’, before bringing them back down to earth with a big ‘financial fools day!’ message.The Taoiseach and Finance Minister dawned dunce hats, and handed out leaflets, showing that they haven’t a clue how to run a country, never mind sort out the current economic downturn. read full story / add a comment

News comes through of the sudden death in Ithaca, New York, of friend and anti-war resister Peter De Mott. Peter was injured in a work accident dying in surgery on Thursday night. Dell must not be allowed get away with this robbery. This Government can't be trusted to do anything to stop this crisis. On Thursday July 29th the HSE were presented with 5,000 signatures on petitions demanding the maintaining of A&E services in Ennis, Nenagh and St.John’s Hospitals. The Socialist Party, who collected the petitions, claim that this is only the beginning and that an active campaign must be built. Socialist Party spokesperson, Cian Prendiville said: “The HSE are unlikely to give up on their agenda of centralisation and cutbacks without a fight. Petitions can be a first step, but what is needed is for people to come along to the upcoming health forum on July 29th and use it as a launching pad for a local action group.” read full story / add a comment

The Irish Socialist Network welcomes the decision of the Irish people to reject the Lisbon Treaty – a document that would have promoted the militarisation of the EU, entrenched Thatcherite principles in European law, and further undermined democracy. After this result, the Lisbon Treaty should be dead and buried. No re-hashed, re-packaged version of the same document should be foisted on the people of Europe. The Alliance for Animal Rights and Circuswatch Ireland welcomes last night’s landmark decision by Fingal County Council. This decision instigated by Socialist Party’s Cllr Clare Daly is the first of its kind in this country. It will mean that ‘wild’ animals will not be allowed perform in Circuses in the Fingal area.We congratulate all of the Council for making the unanimous compassionate decision which is the first of its kind in Ireland. ‘We are looking on this as the beginning of the end for circuses with animals in Ireland. This is the first council to get this motion passed unanimously (despite the issue being raised in other areas in the past). Hundreds of emails were sent to Fingal councillors from animal rights activists which helped enlighten them on the plight of animals confined in the beastwagons of travelling circuses.’ Bernie Wright, Press Officer AFAR’. Its two years after the G8 agreed to ‘Make Poverty History’ and yet 1 billion people are still without access to clean water, according to a recent report by the United Nations World Institute for Development. Both Bob Geldof and Bono have both described the situation as “a farce” with Bono even saying “I feel like a fool that I ever believed them”. On Saturday the 21st and Saturday the 28th of July Socialist Youth will host forums in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Limerick and Galway for young people sick of war, poverty, environmental destruction, low pay, and injustice. This year is the 40th anniversary of the murder of Che Guevara by the CIA in Bolivia. Che was in Bolivia trying to assist the revolution taking place there when he was captured and shot, his last words apparently being “Shoot, coward, you’re going to kill a man”. Che Guevara’s legacy and the struggle for socialism in Latin America today will by discussed at a upcoming forum on the 21st of July in Limerick. We refer to the risk to young schoolchildren and adults that occurred today in Co Meath as covered by the Joe Duffy Show (Liveline) today . The major incident occurred when a Stag ran riot into a school yard whilst being chased by houndsand huntsmen belonging to the Ward Union Hunt Club. ‘ This animal later dropped dead from the stress and injuries sustained in the days hunting’.according to accounts on the programme.’ [ed note by 1 of indymedia.
