Anti-Blood sports Demo with life-size Stag visual…and Open air Book Launch outside the Office of the Taoiseach! The AOHS is protesting outside the office of the Taoiseach Mr. Brian Cowen on Friday…. The purpose of the demo is to remind the Fianna Fail-Green government that the horrific so-called “sports” of hare coursing, carted stag hunting, and fox hunting will continue over the Christmas Season, making an absolute mockery of the “season of peace and goodwill” FRIDAY 19thDecember, 1pm until 2pm at Upper Merrion Street. Dublin.2( the back of the Dail.) The protest venue was chosen because the Taoiseach is a known fervent supporter of live hare coursing and other blood sports. 13 million for Greyhound Industry while the old suffer more hardship The IGB is and has been in receipt of Irish taxpayers funds through the Department of Finance's exchequer since 2001. Horse and Greyhound racing has been awarded these funds through the Horse & Greyhound fund which totalled 75million last year, of which the Greyhound sector received 13 million in this budget.( Of course BIFFO has been a regular visitor to the tracks) read full story / add a comment

How ironic that the Irish Greyhound Derby final falls at the end of Gambling Awareness week,( this week). How many Irish people realise that very young school-going children are freely allowed to bet their pocket money without any legislative protection at Ireland’s Greyhound tracks. Yes, Irelands TOTE BETTING has no under age limit, leaving kids as young as 4 or 5 years old reaching over the counter at places like Shelbourne Park Greyhound Track to gamble their pocket money away. read full story / add a comment

Many areas have to be tackled in our efforts to end Greyhound racing in
Ireland. However none more vital than stopping the annual sports capital
grants from the Irish government. These have amounted to 105,000,000 euro
since 2001.As we are in a recession now surely Hospitals or the elderly
would be more deserving causes. Contacting and appealing to Bord na gCon to stop the slaughter and suffering of Greyhounds that is inherent in racing is like asking the butcher to become vegan, maybe harder. read full story / add a comment

Scandal of Justice Continues: New Extension of Remand in Custody for Austrian Animal Protectionists Because the suspects refused to renounce animal protection, their remand in custody was extended on the grounds that there remains the risk they will perpetrate criminal offences! The District Court of Wiener Neustadt extended the remand in custody of the ten animal protectionists for a further two months today. Even after inspection of the numerous computers and photos that have been confiscated, not one single substantiating charge has been added and many of the existing charges that made the strong impression of having been fabricated have already been dropped by the Chief Public Prosecutor. The Alliance for Animal Rights (AFAR) supports Care for the Wilds campaign opposing Tescos turtle sales. We urge our supporters to Boycott Tesco shops here in Ireland. CWI investigators who visited 32 Chinese Tesco stores in April and May discovered that staff do not adhere to Tesco's new slaughter policies. In 12 stores where CWI witnessed slaughter firsthand, staff continued to kill turtles by decapitation alone or by evisceration. On 21st May 2008 at 6 a.m., heavily armed police officers from an elite unit stormed 21 homes and the offices of a number of non-governmental organisations in Austria. Breaking their way in, the masked police surrounded frightened civilians in their beds at gun point. Ten people were arrested and have been held in custody without specific charge since that day. Despite the statement by the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior that "The measures taken by the police (.) were in no way directed against animal welfare or animal welfare organisations", the removal of computers, documents and other assets has effectively crippled some of the organisations involved. read full story / add a comment

On May 21st special forces of the Austrian police forced entry to 23 homes of animal right activists across Austria. 14 persons were charged with suspected forming of a criminal organisation (§278a of the Austrian penal code) in connection with direct animal right actions. Ten persons were arrested and are in prison as suspects. At first nine were sent to the Vienna Neustadt prison and one to Innsbruck who has been brought to Vienna Neustadt on 28.05. Five prisoners are in hungerstrike at the moment, at least one since the 21.05. (date today: 29.05.). PIGS EXPLOITED FOR ENTERTANMENT WITH NAAS County Council SUPPORT. While Belfast, Cork and Fingal are to be admired for moving with the times by banning the use of animals in roadside shows, Naas on the other hand is showing its retrospect attitude by staging a Pot –bellied pig race in April.It is to coincide with Punchestown Horse Racing to keep the punters in Naas after the horse racing has ended. Its mostly being promoted by the Drinking establishments and restaurants in the town. Pigs are highly intelligent animals and do not deserve to be degraded, frightened or used as part of what is an event that is basically centered around club and pub participation, basically its a beer festival. Defenceless animals should not be part of this type of atmosphere. This also sends out a message to children that animals are mere toys to be used by humans. read full story / add a comment

Surely a pet dog cannot be taken from someone purely because he is a certain breed, especially if he is under proper control and has not done anything wrong. If Dublin City Council can get away with this unfair proposition then what will come next?. This situation must constitute discrimination at the very least. The very idea that DCC are responsible for dogs who bite people on council property is wrong surely?. It was my understanding that owners are responsible for the actions of their pets. If a person falls off a ladder in a Council house are the Council responsible for that too Besides being indiscriminate , this proposition is unenforceable. Where will the dogs be taken to and by whom?. Who will rehome them??? How long will they be kept and where? There is already legislation already in place against dog fighting, if this law was enforced we would not have this problem. read full story / add a comment

A big demonstration was planned but we have just been informed by the Hotel itself that the CA have cancelled in writing as one of its members is sick. ‘ We shed no tears for them but for the thousands of animals shot, mutilated, terrorised and abused in the name of so-called sport.’ Press officer AOHS. Galway Blazers Foxhunters have returned to hunt on the Bishop of Clonfert’s farm in Loughrea, Co Galway, they spent two hours there on Saturday last.. Members of the Galway Blazers hunt were spotted on the church land again by an observer who rang the hunt saboteurs. Apparently badger setts were also disturbed according to the observer.We are investigating this and are urging our members ring or write to the bishop. We have photos of the hunters on the land. We do not know whether the hunt had permission from the bishop to be on the land .We appeal to the Bishops compassionate nature(if he has one) to take steps to protect wildlife on the Catholic Church lands. We will also be contacting the Wildlife Officers regarding the protection of Badgers. The AOHS are issuing a renewed call for the Ward Union’s hunting license to be revoked by the Minister Dick Roche. ‘ In the aftermath of this weeks serious safety risk to children, the terror and ultimate death of a hunted stag , the property damage and disruption of a small village due to stag hunting, we want stag hunting ended permanently now.’ Minister Roche is responsible for issuing the permit to the Ward Union to hunt stag, which really is an exemption to the Wildlife Act, granted to Ireland’s one and only Carted Stag Hunt Club read full story / add a comment

The Captive Animals' Protection Society and Alliance for Animal Rights have renewed their criticism of the Arts Council for again funding animal circuses, shortly after a major report detailing the poor conditions animals are subjected to in Irish circuses. The Arts Council today announced they had given 230,000 Euros to circuses for 2007, 100,000 Euros more than in 2006. The circuses funded include Duffy’s and Fossett’s, both of which use animals. Both CAPS and AFAR have called into question the Arts Council claim that circuses have to provide a copy of their ‘animal welfare policy’ when applying for funding. The Arts Council have refused to give CAPS copies of the policies and AFAR believe they do not exist. read full story / add a comment

A Cork –based Dairy farmer has admitted that animals are routinely beaten by farmers in an Irish Times article written by Agriculture Correspondent Sean Mac Connell on Tuesday last.10-11-06. This revelation of cruelty was made whilst referring to a German made immobiliser system which he uses, he said’ ‘I am a dairy farmer and I treat my animals well. In fact this machine will prevent animals being beaten when they are being trained to be milked’ Mr Hayes said many farmers had responded to the advert, which he placed in the Farmers Journal seeking agents to sell these devices. read full story / add a comment |
