Today's (October 16th) edition of the English newspaper "The Daily Mail" carried an opinion piece by the English journalist Jan Moir. The homophobia and inherent hatred voiced in the article led to an extraordinary amount of comments on that newspaper's website which together with reaction from other newspapers saw the title of the article changed by mid afternoon. By late afternoon an internet campaign had begun to pressure advertisers who use the Daily Mail to cut their support.
According to Wikipedia International Women's Day started in the States in 1909, spread to Copenhagen and other parts of Europe and by 1911 was being celebrated by over 1 million people. Its an official holiday in many countries throughout the world and though it doesn't have this status in Ireland it is being marked by a number of groups and events over the next few days. Heres a selection from the events listed on Indy's Events Calendar.

796 dead at St.Mary’s Mother and Baby Home over 40 years 11:43 Thu 29 May 3 comments
If you are feeling strong this morning Rabble published a must read article yesterday on the 796 dead children found in a mass grave at the St.Mary’s Mother and Baby Home, Tuam. That's not a misprint, for the 40 years this institution operated at least one child died a fortnight, a death rate that approached 10% of those in the home per year! They ranged from 2 days (Thomas Duffy) to 9 years (Sheila Tuohy) old.

The degrees of violence against women and children and the slave labor inflicted on Irish women in the laundries are not caused by some flaw in the Irish character but by the nature of Irish capitalism and its relationship to the anti women dictatorial Catholic church.
Abuse of women in left organizations. Oct 19 4 comments
Sinn Fein I believe are rightly under attack for the issues around the Cahill case and the way they are said to have handled this. Abuse of women (and Men) exists in the revolutionary left also. When this comes up the leadership of these organizations usually try to cover this up by citing the supposed interests of the organization concerned and the revolution. This puts enormous pressure of the victims of assault and has to be condemned.
Catholic church: Monstrous crimes in Ireland. Oct 01 0 comments
We are all familiar with the monstrous crimes that have been carried out by the Catholic hierarchy in Ireland, the slave labor in the Magadlene prison laundries, the physical and sexual abuse in the children's prisons. The victims have to be given compensation. Not by the taxpayers but from the vast wealth of the Catholic church. More generally responsibility has to be allotted for this. Responsibility lies with different forces, the Catholic hierarchy, the Irish capitalist class, but also the members of the Catholic church. John Throne.

Pussy Riot Is Much Ado Propaganda For Naïve Americans Feb 13 3 comments
Pussy Riot, a Russian female punk band of recent notoriety, very much seems to have one tunnel vision goal—at least as reported to Western audiences by Western media—and that is to discredit and defame Russian President Vladimir Putin. The band name ‘riot’ is not hard to understand, as their supposed “art form” resembles a riot, as punk music often enough does; but it is more anti-music in its ear-splitting aggression. Behind scenes of this shallow morality play …lays larger political stories, pseudo-stories, propaganda, foreign inspired revolutions with plenty of American tax money being circulated to bribe public relations schemes and more lately accusations that even NGOs that supposedly care about human rights and the environment have been infiltrated to the point that their real mission is to engage in propaganda operations.

Pro-choice group demands 'Repeal the 8th - Free, Safe, Legal' on Galway Cathedral" Aug 11 Díobháil, 1 comments
In the early hours of Thursday morning, feminist pro-choice activists Díobháil (Bíonn Díobháil a dhéanamh againn: We make mischief) struck again and dropped a banner from Galway Cathedral stating “Repeal the 8th - Free, Safe, Legal” demanding access to abortion. For too long the Church and the State have controlled our bodies and our choices. It is time to finally end the unholy alliance of Church and State. While Díobháil respects peoples’ personal religious beliefs, these should not be imposed on others, and vast majority of people in Ireland agree. Let us not forget, St. Brigid was our first abortionist, and this is why we demand “Take your rosaries off our ovaries!”
