PRESS RELEASE, 21/3/11 23.00PM

FREE GAZA MOVEMENT IN IRELAND CONDEMNS ISRAELI AIR STRIKES ON GAZA

Responding to this evening's Israeli air strikes against Gaza city and earlier incursions by Israeli tanks, the Free Gaza Movement in Ireland called for an immediate end to the violence and for an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.

It is understood that many Palestinians, including children, were severely injured in the air strikes by F16 aircraft.

Commenting, Fintan Lane, national coordinator of the Irish Ship to Gaza Campaign and a member of the Free Gaza Movement, said: "This Israeli air strike is an outrage and an unacceptable act of violence against a civilian population. If this happened anywhere else, there would be calls for a UN no-fly-zone. If the international community is seriously concerned about the people of Gaza, an Israeli withdrawal should be immediately demanded and we should seriously consider the exclusion of Israeli military aircraft from Gazan airspace. A no-fly zone is needed over Gaza to ensure the safety of the civilian population."

He continued: "The incursion by Israeli tanks and troops is part of the ongoing illegal siege that must end immediately. The Palestinian people are entitled to live in peace and security without the danger of indiscriminate attacks by the Israeli armed forces."

Israeli tanks were active along the 'border' today, which is a regular event and part of the ongoing siege. They move a few hundred yards in. Seems they also shelled into Gaza at one point.

Time to demand a No-Fly Zone over gaza. While its topical. Indiscriminate military force against civilian polulations.

Maybe some of those presidential candidates would be prepared to put the head over the parapet.

I wouldn't be waiting for Minister Shatter to take any inimical initiatives.
