Australia's attempt to share credit for bringing peace to Gaza after recognising a 'State of Palestine' and making repeated calls for an under-siege Israel to restrain itself is beyond risible, says Prof James Allan.

Auschwitz survivor supports campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel

category antrim | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Saturday January 30, 2010 12:04author by Oliver Zwartong Report this post to the editors

Belfast, 29 January 2010

Auschwitz survivor, Hajo Meyer, used a speech to encourage support for the international campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. Approximately 100 people attended the meeting in The Grosvenor Hall, Belfast on Friday 29 January 2009.

During his speech, Meyer condemned the misuse of the holocaust for political purposes and compared Israel's treatment of Palestinians today to Nazi treatment of Jews before and during the second world war.

The meeting, to be repeated in Dublin on Saturday 30 January, concludes a month-long series of events organised by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign to mark the first anniversary of Israel's invasion of Gaza in December 2008.

Prior to arriving in Ireland, Meyer had spent the previous week on a speaking tour in Scotland and England organised by the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network. In February, Meyer is to continue his speaking tour in France, Austria and Germany.

The term "Judeo-Nazi" was coined byYeshayahu Leibowitz (1903–94)

He was an Israeli public intellectual, "Israel Prize" Winner [he turned it down] and polymath known for his outspoken opinions on Judaism, ethics, religion and politics. - - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeshayahu_Leibowitz - He taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem or nearly six decades, lecturing in biochemistry, neurophysiology, philosophy, and the history of science.

In 1993, he was selected for the Israel Prize. Before the award ceremony, Leibowitz was invited to speak to the Israel Council for Israeli-Palestinian Peace, where his controversial remarks calling upon Israeli soldiers to refuse orders triggered outrage (and Yitzhak Rabin had threatened to boycott the ceremony).

The jury convened to discuss the possibility of withdrawing the prize, but Leibowitz himself announced that he would refuse to accept it, because he did not want to create antagonism when receiving the prize.

Before the founding of the State of Israel and for a few years after, Leibowitz still believed that the state should strive to adhere to Jewish Law, Halacha. He became progressively critical of government policy, and came to change his views completely. In his later philosophy he denied that the state of Israel had any Jewish religious significance and became an outspoken defender of the complete separation between religion and state.

He was among the first Israeli intellectuals who stated immediately after the 1967 Six-Day War that if Israel held on to the occupied territories, this would lead to the decline of Israel's moral stature.

From then on to his death Leibowitz was an outspoken critic of Israeli values and national policy. His remarks accusing Israeli soldiers of a "Judeo-Nazi" mentality provoked a public outcry amongst Israelis.
