Jimmy Devins resigns from Fianna Fáil

category national | politics / elections | news report author Wednesday August 05, 2009 17:45author by Noble 7 Report this post to the editors

"rats leaving sinking ship" in widely anticipated cosmetic bid to save seat

Jimmy Devins TD has resigned from the Fianna Fáil party.

Devins may be best known to Indymedia readers as the husband of Mary Devins, the judge who presides over many court cases involving opponents of the Shell plan to install an experimental pipeline in Erris, County Mayo.

Jimmy Devins

In a move that has been widely predicted, he claimed the government's refusal to budge on the issue of cancer seen as the reason for his resignation. The resignation from Fianna Fáil is seens as a purely cosmetic move, since he waited until the Dáil was suspended for the summer break. It is unlikely that Devins will vote against the government on any matters unrelated to the health service in his local constituency.

His resignation is an attempt for him to distance himself from an unpopular government policy, and it is unlikely that he will change his stated views on any major issues in the run up to the next election, after which it is believed he will rejoin the party.

Devins's grandfather was a Sinn Féin TD during the civil war. He was captured by Free State forces in 1922 and summarily executed.

He will be all over the news for a while, then quietly forgotten outside Sligo.

He will support the government in votes, and then campaign in the election as an independent in the hope he keeps his seat while FF are wiped out.

He might get back into goverment as an independent supporting a weak FG/LAB government, and in the meantime he will pocket a large independent TD's allowance.

Eamon Scanlon will do the same thing if he has any sense.

Hes a conman. He voted for all of the cutbacks up to now. Makes you think though: does he see an election coming relatively soon? Maybe he reckons Biffo will fail with the budget so he trying to put av few months of distance between himself & FF.

"Devins's grandfather was a Sinn Féin TD during the civil war. He was captured by Free State forces in 1922 and summarily executed. "

If Biffo gets his hands on Devin he'll get some summary punishment. Biffo might even eat him. Biffo does look rather like a Neandteral so it wouldnt really be cannibalism.

Devins has not resigned from the Fianna Fáil party - he has only resigned the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party which means he won't be bound by the party in Dáil votes. This is an old FF ruse to give the impression of making a principled stand. He will crawl back inside the tent at the first opportunity. At least Joe Behan had the guts to make a total break with FF and resign his party membership. This is a smokescreen from judge Devins' husband.

Mr Devins has also declared that he has shares in Standard Life in his declaration to the Dáil for 2008: http://www.oir.ie/viewdoc.asp?DocID=11429&CatID=20

"Standard Life holds 46.6million shares in Shell, or 1.73 per cent of the company, according to Thomson Reuters. Its stake is worth £735.3million, based on the £15.78 closing price for Shell's London-listed shares last night."

So let's get this straight, a TD has shares in a company which has, in turn, shares in Shell.

He supports a government project to install a Shell pipeline in Mayo. This pipeline and the onshore refinery which goes with it will save money for Shell, so the value of shares in that company will increase. For a time, our shareholder TD is even a minister in the government backing this scheme which will make him money.

All the while, his wife, the judge in Belmullet, is merrily sending opponents of this Shell project to jail and casting aspersions on their sanity.

If these men had any ethics or ideals they would resign from the party in disgust at Fianna Fails contempt for the seriously ill people of Ireland , Devins and the wife are well met total hypocrites with hidden agendas to increase their wealth at the expense of the peoples needs.
JUST ANOTHER SCAM
VOTE NO TO LISBON Im sure jimmy will aproove.

If JAMES bought property or shares in Standard Life /Shell ,his wife Mary would also be entitled to share this wealth ".Oh Dear , thats the law James."

Typical selfserving, run with rabbit and hunt with the hound antic. Get these gombeens off our backs - REVOLT.

First we take down Lisbon ...then we take Berlin

NO NO No to a United States of Europe where we give up all contorl to more of these rogues, remote from any democratic accountability to the Irish electorate.

Absolute lunacy

NO to Lisbon

Perhaps devins submerged himself from an already dying FF government partly in order to help keep the spotlight off wifey judge devins so she can continue to flout the spirit of the law and imprison key protesters on the most minor transgressions as long as she possibly can to help keep shell resource grab on the road. The only hypothesis that would adequately explain devins behaviour is if the pair of them had gotten a very large payoff indeed. Makes good corporate sense to get the judiciary under your control before stealing people's resources I guess.

Though he'll be a Hero of everybody that doesn't know about him and wifey Judge Dread ! This begs the queastion - should a Member of the Legislature and a Member of the Judiciary, separate arms of Government, be allowed to marry without one or the other resigning the position ?

The Gombeen Devins will still be pushing Lisbon, so get out and fight him and his ilk now !

John McGuinness in Kilkenny, King of the Gombeen Men, is now backing Lenihan against Cowan for next Leader of Fianna Fail !

The knives are out, the Backbench Revolt is on, trouble is that the victor won't have much of a Party left to lead, Pity Him :-)

Say what you will, lads, but they resigned on principle. John O'Donoghue, who should have done the decent thing and resigned over his abuse of expenses while he was Minister for Kerry and the Arts, slinks away saying nothing and hoping we'll all forget how gombeenish his behaviour was. A Somerville and Ross character for shure! "All dis money! Bejasus, will I stay in a luxury hotel or get a new roof for the byre?" This kind of politician must go. For all our sakes.

I forgot to thank Sean Ryan for his very informative and usefull posting on the Devins investments . It answers a lot of questions .
THANKS SEAN It is information like this that will eventually rid us of these scumbags.
I would not have too much hope that Fianna Fail backbenchers will rise against the party because they are a bunch of self serving cowards and they know that if they bring on an election they will be massacred. If any of the seriously sick people that are striving to get their medicine die as a result of Harneys tyranny. I hope that someone will arange retalliation.

good riddance

But Judging by the polls, we will be replacing this lot with a strong right wing privatisation friendly FG government who will play ball with the bondholders. Will the Irish people ever learn. The frontline had no representation by sinn fein last night even though they polled at the same level as FF.

Media is pushing FG / Labour as their masters want. Ironically, kenny pointed out that there was not much difference between FF and labour policies.

Vote sinn fein ULA to thwart their cosy cartel. FG/labour is just more of the same nonsense
