The Doomed Attempt to Create Academic Journals That Nobody Pays For Mon Nov 17, 2025 19:46 | Dr Roger Watson
Is the academic publishing industry facing ruin from open access journals? Not likely, says Prof Roger Watson. There are some pretty fundamental problems with trying to run a journal that nobody pays for.

Andrew Doyle was warned there would be trouble when he appeared at UC Berkeley for what was intended to be the final stop on Charlie Kirk's tour. Sure enough, he soon found himself in the middle of 'anti-fascist' violence.

Obama said ...."in subtle reference to the book given to him by Chavez"
"Now, let me be clear, just because he handed me a copy of Peter Pan does not mean that I'm going to read it -- (laughter) -- but it's good diplomatic practice to just accept these gifts"
On the other hand, people in Latin America see things differently :
"n the foreword for the 1997 edition, Chilean novelist and first cousin once removed of former Chilean President Salvador Allende, Isabel Allende says that "after the military coup of 1973 I could not take much with me: some clothes, family pictures, a small bag of dirt from my garden, and two books: an old edition of the Odes by Pablo Neruda and the book with the yellow cover, Las venas abiertas de América Latina."[9]
The book was banned in the 1970s by the right-wing military governments in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay."
Large turnout filled most of the auditorium. Ambassador talked about the Coup in Honduras among other things. Apparently the bishops in Venezuela and well as Honduras support the coup. News to me, but probably not too surprising as they are part of the traditional elite in that part of the world. I hope the meeting about Honduras organized by LASC for Wednesday (Seomrai Spraoi 7.30pm) gets a similar turnout.
Yes, its true, the Honduran Bishops have welcomed the Coup. Any vestiges of Liberation Theology have been purged from the Latin American RCC Hierarchy. They spit on the memory of Archbishop Romero and cheer on the prsent day equivalents of his assassins.
In Spain however, sections of the RCC are apologising for their role in the Spanish Civil War and acknowledging that Francoites murdered Republican priests.
The bishop of Vitoria celebrated a memorial service in the cathedral of the Basque regional capital yesterday to mark the execution 73 years ago by Francoist troops of 14 priests who had never received a funeral, and whose deaths were never officially recorded.

As the assassinations and murders begin, are we watching "Chile for Slow Learners" ? So far two leftist leaders have been killed in "mysterious" circumstances and a young man shot at an anti-coup demo. Television stations from other Latin American countries have been sent packing and diplomats from the Nicaraguan, Cuban and Venezuelan embassies roughed-up. Keep an eye on developments from the Latin American sites such as http://www.venezuelanalysis.com/, - http://www.venezlon.co.uk/ and http://www.granma.cu/ingles/index.html and if you can, please contact your local TD to press for a statement from Ireland condemning the coup. The Dail is going into Summer recess but there may be other mechanisms. If anybody has any suggestions ?
