The session - which takes place at 2pm on Saturday 16thMay in the Central Hotel, Exchequer Street, Dublin 2 – will take the form of an open meeting and be addressed by two prominent Palestinian speakers and a well known Irish activist. They will be Dr. Ghada Karmi, and Professor As’ad Abdul Rahman. This will be a most important forum for hearing first hand from Palestinians their analysis on how a future state for Palestine might be brought about and their views on how we in Ireland can help bring about peace and justice in the Middle East.

Biographical details for speakers

Dr. Ghada Karmi is a leading Palestinian activist, academic and writer. She was born in Jerusalem and left Palestine for England in 1949. She practised as a doctor for many years working as a specialist in the health of migrants and refugees. Currently Ghada Karmi is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter. She is author of two acclaimed books: In Search of Fatima (2004), a poignant and haunting autobiographical tale of her exile from Palestine, and Married to Another Man: Israel’s Dilemma in Palestine (2007), which looks at practical ways forward for those concerned about the ongoing plight of Palestine. Dr. Karmi is also a leading advocate for the Academic Boycott of Israel and a long-time proponent of the ‘One-State Solution’.

Prof. As’ad Abdul Rahman is Independent Executive Member of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). Prof. Rahman is also Minister for Palestinian Expatriates and Diaspora in the State of Palestine and Chairman of the Palestine International Institute (http://www.paldiaspora.org/). Along with being a regular contributor to a number of Arab newspapers, Prof. Rahman has written 19 books and 46 academic papers dealing with topics as varied as Comparative Government, International Politics, Palestine, the Refugee Issue, the Zionist Movement and Arab-Israeli politics.
