Reformists barred from Iran polls

category international | politics / elections | other press author Wednesday January 30, 2008 15:53author by pat c Report this post to the editors

Democracy Iranian style: you are not allowed to stand for election if the Iranian Regime doesnt like your opinions! Under the Iranian political system, potential candidates are vetted twice, once by the interior ministry and the second time by the Guardian Council, which is made up of Islamic clerics. Full report at the link from the well known Pro US Propagandists Al Jazeera.

The Iranian government has barred more than 2,000 prospective candidates from contesting in forthcoming parliamentary elections, in effect removing the biggest rival to hardliners in power.

Most of those disqualified were seeking democratic changes within Iran's ruling Islamic government led by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president.

Abdollah Naseri, spokesman for an umbrella group of 21 reformist factions, said worrying reports have been confirmed. "The number of candidates disqualified is surprising."

Mohammad Khatami, the former Iranian president and reformist, said the government had no right to deprive Iranians the right to contest. Many of those disqualified were key legislators or cabinet ministers during Khatami's tenure.

You don't tell us what reforms these 'reformists' want to bring about . I also wonder if these 'reformists' are some of the 'reformists' sponsored by the US to foster subversion and undermine the Iranian government?

Could you let us know who specifically these 'reformists' are and what 'reforms' they are trying to bring about. I'm sure that you are not supporting the American agents who are continually fostering intrigue against the Iranian Government. The agents the US are sponsoring with millions of dollars are no doubt a different group from the one you are referring to.

Also, since you are so concerned for the People of Iran and such an expert perhaps you could tell us who the US backed agents are. Surely the legitimate groups you constantly refer to must know who they are. It's just that I can never remember you posting anything, in all your crusade against the Iranian government, that talks negatively about the US backed people.

Former president Mohammad Khtami called on pro-reform movements on Wednesday to wait and see what would be the result of the petitions filed for reconsidering the competence of the rejected parliamentary candidates by the vetting bodies.

"Like all the existing political movements, we want to actively participate in the political arena of the country and no one can prevent us from doing so,” he asserted. “But our presence in the election without having any candidates does not make sense".

Emphasizing the determination of the pro-reform movements to stand in the legislative elections, the former president said many of the rejected candidates should be allowed to run.

Perhaps you could answer the question about who these 'reformists' are and what specifically are the 'reforms' they are seeking to bring about. Surely that is a simple request of somone speaking on their behalf. Are you really supporting them? If you are then you should have no problem expanding your 'Ironic' article to answer the obvious questions of any politically motivated reader.

Or is it that you are simply publishing anything that is against the Iranian Government without understanding or caring what exactly it is? Without knowing who the reformists are or what they are agitating for?

The true left should wake up to the brutal realities of grave abuses of human rights by Islamic elite and capitalist leaders and classes; such as in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, Malaysia and Indonesia, as amongst many nations with Islamic leaders. I've been an active member of the Irish Anti-War movement for a few years and still is, but I will not be uncritical anymore towards such human rights abuses in order to prevent war towards Iran. The reality of the abuses are real enough especially for the ordinary masses, Islamic or otherwise, living under such oppressed regimes. It's definitely about Capitalism mainly and how religion, race i.e the so-called "Muslim race" and ultra-nationalism ie. the so-called united "Muslim nationhood/Islamic World" have been constructed ideologically and practically and very conveniently by the elite and capitalist classes including Islamic ones, especially after the Iraq War to divide and rule. Right now I'm back in Malaysia and seeing the brutality of the Islamic elite-capitalist leaders and classes whether from the ruling and dominant party UMNO or the Islamic opposition party, PAS using the Malay race, Islam and "Malay-Islamic nationhood" to divide and rule between different ethnic groups and religion in order to sustain their unjust power and system; finally woke me up. Imagine the extreme brutality that others are facing including Islamic women, in brutal regimes like Iran, Sudan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are facing; such as in Iran, the stoning of women for adultery or common enough honor killings from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan. Thus, western left especially must understand, despite of the real enough propagandas by the capitalist masters of US-UK, any form of human rights abuses by any capitalist and elite classes anywhere including by Islamic ones must be condemned as equally. That's what true justice is about after all.

"Noor Aza Othman"

Aren't you in police custody? Malaysian police stations must be very accommodating if they allow you Internet access whilst in their custody.

This is impersonation if ever there was. And what is truely repulsive is that the name used is that of a respected activist who is currently under arrest and facing prison in Malaysia.

Disgusting.

Kal-El, Obviously you haven't read carefully my emails. I was arrested and jailed for one night with 7 other human rights activists for defending free speech and freedom of assembly during peaceful protest on the International Human Rights Day in Malaysia. We are currently on bail and supposed to be charged in a trial on 28/01/08 but the trial now postpone to 05/01/08 for supposedly attending illegal assembly and obstructing police. Police have absolute discretion whether to allow any permits for any protest and usually any protest that criticizes govt. are banned. The ones detained under the extremely unjust Internal Security Act (ISA) that allows dtention without trial, are five human rights activists and leaders from HINDRAF defending ethnic Indian human rights, due to the discrimination, fascism and racism being practised by Islamic leaders from the ruling and dominant capitalist-elite Malay-Islamic classes and leaders using race, Islam and ultra-nationalism of "Malay-Muslim nationhood' to crush human rights and democracy; whilst brainwashing the dominant Malay-Islamic ethnic group masses!!!!! And by the way, I'm trying to reform Islam especially on women's rights; any problem with that?

Its quite obvious that you haven't got a clue about what you are writing.

The reformists who have been banned from standing are largely supporters of 2 previous Iranian presidents, Mohammad Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani . Only a very stupid/ignorant person would suggest that they have links with the US or are funded by them. If there were any such US agents among those disbarred dont you think the current Iranian Government would be shouting it from the rooftops? I suggest you do some research next unless you want to keep making a fool of yourself in public.

I will expose another of your lies. I am on the rcord here on Indymedia condemning the PMOI which is backed by the US.

As for the rest your ramblings I need only point out that I support strikers, students and womens rights activists in Iran who are fighting for basic human rights.
