raytheon 9 trial starting 19th Nov

category national | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Sunday November 11, 2007 15:21author by Goretti Horgan - Derry Anti War Coalitionauthor email resistderry at aol dot comauthor address Derry Report this post to the editors

The start of the raytheon 9's trial has again been delayed - this time to Monday 19th November.

Support continues to come in from all over the world, including from Naomi Klein and her husband, film-maker Avi Lewis.

The charges are considerably reduced from those they were originally accused of: now, they are charged with affray and criminal damage, with no amount mentioned for the level of damage caused to raytheon's mainframe computer.

Is this a callout for solidarity.
Do the Raytheon 9 want people to head to Derry for the trial.
Is there any crash pad accomodation for people coming to support?
Is there a program of events wound the trial etc.
Is there a contact number?

32 County Sovereignty Movement.
13/11/2007

Support the Raytheon 9

The 32 County Sovereignty Movement call for all republicans, socialists, anti imperialists and all other progressives to attend the trial of the Raytheon 9 in Derry. The trial is due to begin on Monday 19th November at 10am and we would urge as many as possible to come out not only in a show of solidarity with the 9 but to protest at Raytheon’s continued presence in Ireland also.
The 32 County Sovereignty Movement fully support the actions of the Raytheon 9 in opposing this purveyor of weapons of mass destruction that have caused so much devastation to communities in Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine.
In opposing this multinational killing machine we do so not alone from a moral and humanitarian position but also from a political one. These nations right to national sovereignty, free from external interference and aggression is being denied and Raytheon are complicit in this denial.
It would be hypocritical for any republican organisation to fail to condemn Raytheon’s presence in Derry considering the fact that Irish sovereignty is being denied by a foreign government who will use force of arms to protect their illegal occupation if necessary.
The 32 County Sovereignty Movement send special solidarity greetings to the four members of our Liam Lynch/Patsy Duffy Cumann in Derry who are members of the Raytheon 9.

I understand that anyone who is anti-war should be anti-imperialist since it is imperialism that causes war. But is there not also an imperative in this 21st century for those who are anti-imperialist and anti-war to reject the kind of narrow nationalism of the kind we have seen from the armed side of the 32CSM over the last while as they try to restart the war in the North by shooting at off-duty cops?

It is true that national sovereignty is everywhere an illusion these days but it seems to me it would be hard for anyone to show how the British presence in the North these days is any more malign than it is in Scotland or Wales. And what would shooting or bombing the Brits out (which the Provos failed to do despite having a thousand times more support and organisation) bring to the North? National sovereignty? Like we have in the South?

Cop yourselves on, boys. I had hoped that the involvement of 32CSM members in the Raytheon 9 and Derry anti war group would lead them to take a more political approach and see beyond the armed struggle. The last week or so has shown that it hasn't. And you do have to wonder what they are doing in an anti-war group at all, since they are clearly not anti-war.

Anti war groups are not necessarily anti war, Anti-war.
Look at IAWM, who believe that some struggles are legitimate and the force of arms in such cases is justified.
Raytheon are another manifistation of the the British war machine in Ireland and as such has been targeted by our members in our on-going struggle to get a foreign government and its lackies out of our country. We are proud to stand with our representatives in and the other members of the Raytheon 9 who epitomise our struggle against the occupiers of our country.

I certainly don't support the 32csm campaign and not sure that the British can be described as an occupying force any more since a vote on the island of Ireland would almost certainly say no to re-unification (unlike, say, Iraq where the overwhelming majority of people clearly identify the US/UK as occupying forces and want them out).

If supporting the Raytheon 9 means supporting a campaign which is narrowly nationalist and, in essence, sectarian - since most Protestants want to maintain the link with Britain - then I don't support them..

Does this mean that the Derry anti war group supports the shooting of policemen in the North?

The Raytheon 9 are individuals, each with their own set of beliefs and each with their own reasons for doing what they did.
But no matter what their reasons for doing it, it does not take away from the fact that what they did will have a positive impact on the antiwar community and to highlight that the people of Derry are not prepared to sit back and see their city become a prostitute to a company which is building bombs and jet fighters in their midst. If the devil himself had stood with the nine on that day then his past actions should be irrelevant when judging him in this particular case.

National sovereignty is not an illusion in Venezuela , Cuba , Iran or southern Lebanon . Which is why bombs made in Raytheon were being dropped on Lebanese children and are being used to threaten other countries who have the temerity to guard their national sovereignty against British and US imperialism . Although I accept an expression of national dignity such as sovereignty is highly unfashionable in modern Ireland , and there are those within the Raytheon 9 many regard as deeply unfashionable .
Britiain are an occupying force because they occupy part of Ireland , which is not Britain . Its a seperate nation . If there would be a no vote to unification tomorrow then the British wouldnt have gone to such lengths to prevent the Irish people from exercising their vote in such an election for the past 90 years . Instead we have a veto over a single referenda by a minority to justify the violation of Irish sovereignty . If you believe political parties accross Ireland would actively campaign against a united Ireland then name them and spell out the basis on which they would oppose it . Confronting members of the British crown forces in Ireland is not " narrow nationalism" either .
A country that occupies Ireland or any part of it is malignant by its very presence and its arrogant usurpation of national sovereignty and the practice of a national democracy . The lack of dignity involved in accepting this as a perfectly amiable state of affairs is certainly not a measure of its lack of malignancy , only a measure of its ultimate success . Raytheons bombs would readily be used to threaten Ireland just as quickly as any other country that sought to defend its sovereignty .

Barry has summed it up better than I ever could, as usual.
Unfortunately some people see anti war as just black and white. Fortunately the DAWC were prepared to look beyond that and see that in order to strike at the heart of Raytheon and their imperalist masters they would have to get off the fence and embrace those who are not prepared to just stand there and talk about it. Like it or not but without the interaction of 32 CSM and IRSP the action on Raytheon would have been nothing more than a few people standing outside the factory. Sometimes in order to end war you need to counter it with an equal force. omething which has been proven in this country time and time again.

Yet again, someone who says they are a member of the 32csm has repeated this lie that if it hadn't been for the 32csm people among the Raytheon 9, there would have been no occupation of Raytheon on 9th August 2006.

This is just lies, as any discussion with your own members who are part of the Raytheon 9 will tell you. And, if they are implying that they led the move to gain entry to the building, then the truth will be seen in court next week when the CCTV is shown. It is clear from the CCTV footage that it was socialists who led the move into the building and, indeed, were the first into the Raytheon offices - though this was mainly because we had occupied the place before and knew what we were doing. There was no, I repeat NO, violence or intimidation used to gain entry to the Raytheon offices - just as there was none when we occupied it back in March 2003 after the Baghdad market place bomb.

BTW, there were no IRSP members present, an ex-IRSP member, yes, but he has made it clear that he is formerly of that Party and no longer associated with any republican group.

And just to be clear: the Derry Anti War Coalition is a broad grouping. It encompasses pacifists, christians, buddhists, feminists, socialists of all kinds, anarchists of all kinds, republicans of all kinds and people who don't want any 'ist' attached to their thinking. The members are those who turn up to meetings. However, it is worth recalling that the decision to occupy and 'decommission' Raytheon was taken at a meetings of 50 - 70 people.

I am going to repeat a question I asked in another thread, re: the busworkers strike, when one troll or a set of hoaxers tried to involve me and the iawm into a slanging match (since deleted) : Why is it that there is always a crank that attacks the iawm when we take an action against the Empire's wars?
Last week it was the successful march and Yassemine's excellent speech against the US plans re: invading Iran. She was also on Near FM and she argued brilliantly why Ireland should not involve itself in another adventure - likely to produce a more destructive mayhem than Iraq.
This week is the solidarity picket with the Raytheon comrades who are going through a trial....the Derry anti war activists are affiliated to the iawm and we are supporting them....we will try to mobilise as much support as we can so that the jury finds them not gulty...which would mean that they would have to accept that Raytheon, a producer of deadly weapons, is the guilty party. Period.....
Is what the iawm is doing, are our actions such a threat that the ruling elites, or their paid or unpaid servants/lackeys have to spend time and energy attempting to attack us - lies, innuendos, nonsense, anything goes. But it WONT WORK!!
Tomeile or whatever anonymous handle you use....get back to your senses please. Stop attempting to divide, stop your provocations and go back to wherever you work or live and leave this thread alone.

The trial didn't start today either. There was a serious illness in the judge's family and it was postponed to Thursday next, 22nd.

The Derry Anti War Coalition will be updating the Raytheon 9 website daily, reporting what happened that day in the trial. We hope to include a daily update on Youtube also (with a link from the R9 website)

Thanks to those from IAWM who travelled to Derry this morning for the protest at the Court House and thanks also for the protest at the Israeli Embassy. DAWC asked for this protest because a central part of the defence is the DAWC's determination to stop further war crimes during the assault on Lebanon in the summer of 2006. For proof of Israeli war crimes and Raytheon's complicity in those war crimes, it's worth reading the Human Rights’ Watch report Why They Died: Civilian casualties in Lebanon during the 2006 war. No doubt a ploy between Raytheon and the crown forces to drag this out and leave the Raytheon 9 hanging on even longer so their Christmas is spoiled.
These subtle tricks designed to intimidate are not fooling anyone.
Chin up lads and stick it out!

Discrimination, Illegal Interrogation, and Mental Torture

Yong Li v. Raytheon Company (1st Cir., No. 07-1185)

Yong Li was a senior software engineer in Raytheon's Marlborough facility. As a result of her early year internal discrimination complaint, she was retaliatory harassed by her managers in 2004. The harassment caused her depressive, when she reported to human resource about her personal safety, Raytheon, through EAP counselor John Didio, imposed a mental evaluation without her consent, he did not ask why she felt unsafe, he directly asked “do you want to kill someone” with his finger pointing at her and showing scurrilous staring. Gripped with panic, she was traumatized and became long term disabled.
