Grassroots Women Protests CAFTA

category international | gender and sexuality | other press author Thursday August 16, 2007 10:47author by Chris Murray Report this post to the editors

and Monthly isiswomen report on Trade and Equality.

The We! publication of Isis women, based in the Phillipines is now out.
It, as usual, draws together the threads of globalised resistance and how Western and
globalised economic movements effect emergent democracies and economies.

http://www.isiswomen.org is affiliated to the European Feminist Forum and runs
a radio service and links to feminists in Iran, Costa Rica, Iraq and globally.
This months issue focuses on the movement for Changes in the UN
Gender Architecture Reforms ; and the Movement against CAFTA.

Banner of Dreams

"For the Women and the growing grassroots resistance movement in Costa Rica, CAFTA poses
a threat to their country's democracy and the environment. They say that it would dismantle the
social welfare system of the Country through extensive privatisation of essential services
and contribute to growing poverty and inequality".

CAFTA will extend the unequal distribution of resources experienced under the
North American Free Trade Agreement.(NAFTA)

The last link published on Indymedia.ie included the request for papers from activist feminist women
and links to the free radio lobby who are agigtating for extension of rights to community radio advocates
which is being shoved out of the market by the commercial stations. The activists in Oaxaca
have appealed for Constitutional change to communications laws to ameliorate community
radio broadcast for democratic movements. (AMARC)

Today's London independent has an essay by Robert Fisk on cultural destruction, regarding
the abuse of libraries, statues and centuries of human endeavour to be cheapened by
the vast industrialisation market opening of cultural dominance-

Last month's http://www.isiswomen.org publication, the 'We! Bulletin', which focuses on 'Movement's Within':-
Grassroot activity and community radio, as well as movements for change directly related to how women
are changing things for themselves published the above article and pictures of the quilts , the links
included reports on grassroot opposition to the CAFTA agreements with links to indymedia Puerto Rico in
the comments. Indybay is reporting mass protests and a set of backround and historical links to the CAFTA
issue:-

The upcoming 7th of October referenedum will be binding if 30% vote. The first indybay link in the comment above
does not work , so am including a link to the globalise this site which has business backround and links to
essays on CAFTA.

The Referendum on the CAFTA which only requires 30% voter turnout and participation
to become Legally binding occurs on Wednesday the third of October in Puerto Rico.

The CAFTA is Agreed in these countries:-

Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic and El Salvador.

NYC indymedia is reporting and linking to Kathy Holt of the Nicaragua Network:-

I put in the comments section that the CAFTA referendum was occuring on Wednesday the
third of October, its on Sunday the Seventh. the links and solidarity stuff is ok- just the wrong
date.

The referendum requires only 30% for the CAFTA to go through, the details and report
are on :- http://www.radiofeminista.net/Julio07/notas/Dreams.htm

Tens of Thousands of peasants Currently Mobilising All over Colombia;-
http://www.indymedia.org/en/index.shtml

Colombian Coverage:- http://colombia.indymedia.org

The CAFTA vote is Puerto Rico of the 07/10/07 has little coverage, the article above , published
by Isis women in Manila has links to the reasons why indigenous and grassroots activists
are opposing bi-laterals with the US. The image of the quilt banner which i am re-publishing here
rejects for Puerto Rican society the TLC's- Tratado de Libro Comercio. Whilst if you google the local
Puerto Rico press of which the eleven titles that are bunched together politically want the CAFTA
and closer relation to the States, the communites are rejecting of the perceived abuse of
their society by the US. The link to the latest WE! article looks at the economic and social
repurcussions on Chile and Thailand due to the Japanese FTA's:-
