International Working Women’s Day in Derry was remembered by a number of local activists who celebrated revolutionary women contributed to the struggle of women’s liberation throughout the year’s locally, nationally and internationally.

Those women celebrated upon placards throughout the city ranged from legendary Irish activists or socialist revolutionaries. Women such as Eleanor Marx, Nora Connolly, Angela Davis, Miriam Daly, Emma Goldman, Constance Markiewicz, Mairead Farrell and Bernadette Devlin have been honored as leading women who continue to inspire women locally and across the world.

Many international liberation struggles of which women played or continue to shape and play an important roll in were also focused in on from Nepal, Ireland, Columbia, North America, India, Chile and Spain.

Very good work done there in Derry. It's reminiscent of work done in Belfast last year. Who knows where it'll pop again next year? ;-)

The Civil rights association which gave birth to politcal movements in the
North of Ireland in the mid-sixties was responsible for the politicisation of a generation.

We are not an insular nationalist/Unionist Island.
We are part of a global community suppousedly of equals wherin the issues
of :- Environment destruction, sexual equality, race equality and capitalism
have decimated communities North and South of the border.

The two parties who are leading the ballots have had opportunities to engage
with the wider issues particularly of racism against the chinese community
and street violence- was the Nof I election fed from these issues?

Were women from local politcal and community organistions selected to
represent and voice their communities?

Of course women are angry and rightly too.
Ireland -26 counties and the 6 county statelet have the lowest gender and race
representation in both parliaments.

Politicians will not attend women's meetings on issues of reproductive rights
in the south "coming up to an election, because it's too 'politically hot'

they promise to take on issues like 'X', like church/state separation,
like racism and they sit all day on their asses makng pensions and discussing
shite.

Solidarity to the Derry women- well done.!
Engage politically at any level- including that of non-participation in
suffrage until they listen to the female lobby.

Campaign to remove bigotry and out wotworn Nationalist notions to increase
universal suffrage.

Resist Capitalism and PR branded politics.

Fight for equality.

peace on the island of Ireland comes from unity of purpose-

HOW MANY WOMEN WERE SELECTED AND ELECTED FOR THE PARTIES
THAT WILL DECIDE THE FUTURE OF YOUR COMMUNITIES?

oh, good christ! how about the fact that men still get to make decisions about what we can and cannot do with our own bodies for starters - ie. the fact that women in ireland are still unable to obtain safe legal abortions. think next time before posting. sheesh.
