Basque bits & bobs.

category international | consumer issues | news report author Thursday November 30, 2006 23:02author by iosaf Report this post to the editors

The Basque political situation is not all about the "Peace Process". Many other things happen there too.

For years the group "Soziedad Alkoholica" used a logo on their albums of anarcho-punk garage angst music which was quite obviously a take on the logo used by ETA.

Their disks were withdrawn from sale by the largest department store chain & they were brought before the Judiciary to be investigated for "incitement to or glorification of terrorism". They've been cleared. They sing songs about victims too.
Soziedad Alkoholica cleared by Spanish Judiciary. The logo "is similar" but that is "art".

Their troubles were first reported to you here :-

Another interesting titbit, is the result of the Taberna searches. In the last months over 200 bars in both the Basque & Navarran regions of the Spanish state have been searched & registered to evaluate the alledged role they played in supporting Terrorist networks.

They've been cleared as well.
So There you have it!

It's ok to be Basque & play heavy music & it's ok to be Basque whilst drinking lots & listening to the usual folk music, ballads & bag-pipes & speaking your own language with it. =Nothing wrong with it.

I suppose someone will tell you about the prisoners now in the comments or the video war, as the ruling Socialists lament the obstructive attitude of the opposition PP party & issue a video detailing Aznar's concessions to what he termed the Basque liberation movement . Maybe someone will tell you that ETA prisoners continue to be a) not eating
b) flown in from French prisons to face another assasination trial.
c) difficult to visit.

Perhaps someone will even mention the absolute absence of snowfalls in all of Europe's mountainous regions & wonder about the long term changes to both Winter Sport fixtures & Tourism related local economies.

It's quite probably someone will quote euskera it being a beautiful language spoken by an uncommonly beautiful people who don't like their neighbours the Spanish, French or Catalans who are also uncommonly beautiful but enjoy a higher profile.

Don't worry about it. You're Irish - an independent proud & self-determined nation & example to them all.
