Zack Polanski's claim that mass immigration is necessary because he "doesn't want to wipe someone's bum" is at least honest, says Joanna Gray. But the deeper problem is we now think care is the state's job.

Rural England's village pubs face a quiet death under tax hikes, wage rises and planning laws that crush communities ? a grim reality, says Simon Panter, that goes far beyond the loss of just a pint.

Kill The Immigration Bill Public Meeting

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Monday October 09, 2006 17:02author by Residents Against Racism - RARauthor address c/o 12a Brunswick Place Dublin 2author phone 24hr helpline 0876662060/0877974622 Report this post to the editors

On 17th of October Residents Against Racism are holding a public meeting to discuss and plan a way to campaign against the forthcoming racist immigration bill.

Immigration bill is another ploy by the government to whip up prejudice and discrimination against immigrants and asylum seekers.

If introduced non E.U. will be forced to carry bio metric id cards, the asylum system will become more draconian with the abolition of the tribunal stage which means there will be no appeal stage and asylum seekers will be denied the right to marry and a simple driving offense will be instant deportation.

Speakers on the night will include:

Chair Des Bernas
Barrister Cillian Mc Morrow
Migrant Worker Paddy Mophoso
Asylum Seeker Philip living in Cork
And speaker from Residents Against Racism

Also contributing from the floor will be solicitors and Barristers who are opposed to the immigration bill.

This immigration bill is against basic human rights and we ask all groups interested to attend the meeting.

17th Of October Tuesday ATGWU Hall on middle Abbey Street starting from 7pm.

I have to say that I broadly welcome the forthcoming immigration bill that the government is bringing in. We need it to protect immigrants as well as Irish people from rogue Irish employers who only see immigrants as a cheap work alternative to Irish workers. I also believe that ngo's out there who have also welcomed this bill deserve to be credited in some way for their work too.

The deportation of immigrants for minor traffic offences.
The issuing of bio-metric ID's to immigrants.
The right of Gardai to demand the bio-metric ID.
(aparthied S.A comes to mind)

The detail of the bill is at http://www.justice.ie

Broadly welcoming a bill which infringes basic civil rights by a Tanaiste (for the moment)
noted for flawed and discriminatory legislation which is open to constituional challenge,
and whom is involved in criminalising news gathering, and subjecting you as a citizen to
the longest Traffic Data retention period inside Europe and globally, would seem to be either
a lack of knowlege about the broad aspects of the Bill, or an unwillingness to face
up to the Continous erosion of citizen rights by the dept of Justice.

The blurbs and pretty folders that Michael uses to transmit the white-wash to a public
comprised of people too busy to care or too complacent to question is allowing for
infringement of basic rights.
Meanwhile he is seeking to limit two countries immigrants for work purposes
at the moment.

That is terrible, imagine denying asylum seekers the right to marry - simply unbelievable. You would think, in a Catholic country such as this, that they would even be allowed this basic right.

Although you would think that it doesn't really matter about the abolition of the tribunal stage, its all so blatantly unfair anyway that asylum seekers are not given a decent crack at the whip and it seems alot of them dont get to stay here anyway.

You're obviously confusing the Immigration, Residence & Protection Bill with the Employment Permits Bill (which contains its own problems). If you read the heads of the new Immigration Bill, you will see pretty clearly that it does not offer protection but instead attempts to curb civil and constitutional rights.
