Blockades continue

Early this morning over 200 people protesting against the construction of the Corrib Gas terminal at Ballinaboy blocked the Bangor Road and prevented access to the site.

At 08.00 they were forcibily removed from the road by the police and some injuries were sustained. Some of the workers managed to enter the site but their trucks have so far failed to enter.

At the time of writing, the protesters are making their way towards police lines at the oil road to Bangor to prevent the trucks from proceeding to the site.

Please show solidarity with the people of Erris by participating in a demonstration or a blockade near you. Shell and Statoil garages are being targeted with other installations across the country to be announced. Details will be posted on Indymedia all this week.

However iif you can, get across to Erris and take part in the blockade of the terminal. Details at the link below.

Further information and pix to follow.

As the protestors made their way towards Bangor they met the trucks en route to the refinery site. A local woman parked her car on the road blocking the way and the protestors sat down stopping the trucks from passing before being removed by Gardaí. The local woman is still parked blocking the way on one side of the road.

Fair play everyone out there on the roads in Eris this mucky morning - Keep up the good work .

The various hatchet jobs attempted by the media over the weekend are a sure sign "they" (shell/marathon/statoil/cops/right wing hacks/cops/state/pro-developement lobby etc etc - the "big other" ) are indeed under pressure

- A call has gone out for people to get down to the area now.

Unlikely that anyone might happen to be in the area AND reading this but just in case!!

Health and safety is the primary issue. Work that is percieved to threaten life, health, safety and property has to be questioned and persuasion to stop it. It is a moral question, not an economic or political issue. A refinery is a cleaning apparatus. It is assumed that the raw gas has to be cleaned. Where are the toxins going. Into the air, into the soil and into the beautiful fish filled waters of Broadhaven Bay.

Following the events witnessed and experienced by myself from the dark hours of a.m. 3rd October 2006 to date, I would request that the persons in GS uniform present at Ballinaboy be referred to as anything BUT Gárdaí.

The heavy-gangism enacted daily down here is an insult to the founding tenets of the GS; they were not formed - as an unarmed force following a fierce Civil War - to be used as corporate bodyguards for Big Oil.

There is respect due for the GS only when the members adhere to their founding principles; the shower at Ballinaboy are as far removed from Respect - for themselves or anybody else - as it is possible to be only in a perverted Brown Envelope State.

Just received phone summary of this mornings events.
Several blockades occurred up until 11 o clock holding up the entrance of each batch of workers.
The car that was blocking the road was towed away, damage occuring in the process.
RTE camera crews obtained extensive footage of locals, many of them elderly, being dragged away by gardai, reported to have been shown on 1PM news.
Interviews with Willie Corduff and other locals, during which appeals were made for the Gardais presence in Rossport to end-assurances given that the campaigners would struggle to the bitter end.
Minimal presence at gate now-round the clock monitoring in place.
Appeals for assistance from rest of country in manning blockades.
End.

In the absence of a Garda ombudsman, who do we report abuses to?

Let's expose the Garda abuse and ensure they are brought to justice.

Let's get Kathleen O'Hara up to Erris!

Do you mean the head of the Garda inspectorate, Kathleen O'Toole? She wants the Gardaí to be armed. (http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/1001/garda.html) I bet Shell would love the chance to order the guards to plug a few. Following on from Maura Harrington's comment above, it's probable that the Garda action of acting as a private security firm on behalf of Shell is part of a process which seeks to break all connection with the Gardaí of independent Ireland and create a paramilitary force, like the RIC of yore, who are there to protect imperial interests, at the cost of Irish lives if necessary.
If you didn't mean O'Toole, though, sorry I took you up wrong.

From what I saw on this evening's Six-One television news on RTE it seems clear that people have been injured and endangered by garda violence. If they continue along this route it is only a matter before a member of the public is seriously injured with back, neck and joint injuries most likely. In this light it is important that any photo or video evidence relevant to this be retained securely. Gardai should know that they can be subjected to legall proceedings if they injure people.

On the same news bulletin was the hilarious story of the two drunken Garda Special Branch members fighting outside the US Embassy in Dublin which they were being paid to protect. (What were 2 drunk branch men going to do if a serious attempt to attack the embassy ensued?) The two cops went drinking in Paddy Cullen's pub across the road from the embassy which continued serving them well beyond legal pub opening hours. They then brawled outside the embassy before one of them handed his Smith & Wesson handgun to a uniformed garda and went off home. He was caught drunk driving on the way home. I wonder if he was the same garda who left his Uzi in Garret Fitzgerald's garden shed all those years ago?
