Solidarity Pickets in Dublin

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Tuesday September 26, 2006 23:38author by Shell to Seaauthor email dublinshelltosea at gmail dot comauthor phone 0871323369 Report this post to the editors

Large groups of protesters gathered in Dublin this evening

Many people gathered in Dublin this evening to express solidarity with the community in North West Mayo who are under siege from Shell and the Irish government.

Protesters gathered at three sites- Statoil on Ushers Quay, Shell in Donnybrook, and the Headquarters of Shell E & P Ireland on Leeson Street.

There was a mix-up about the status of the Statoil Station on the quays, which meant that when people showed up to protest there were no placards and leaflets for them. This was due to mistaken information being passed on as fact, and Dublin Shell to Sea want to take this opportunity to apologise for this.

An internal investigation has been launched...

Given the foregoing, it's fair to say that the evening was a success, with estimated numbers of protesters being around twenty at Donnybrook, around fifteen at Corrib House, and around ten at Ushers Quay.

The fact that 45-50 protesters gathered at very short notice to protest the behaviour of Shell in Mayo this morning shows the depth of feeling regarding this issue.

Plans are in place for further protests, the nature of which depends, to some extent, on what happens at Ballinaboy.

Despite the cancellatiion of the Picket on the Quays, several people showed up late and were unaware of the postponement. The small handful of protesters held a banner saying 'our world is not for sale' and a placard urging cars to boycott the station.

These pictures are from last Tuesday. There are some reports on the site about the Donnybrook blocade, if they don't reach your standard then have a go at writing something up - it sounded like quite the event.
