Ireland & Conjugal Rights

category national | gender and sexuality | opinion/analysis author Sunday September 03, 2006 21:26author by sofia - tara & taboo Report this post to the editors

not exactly fresh news but you know how it goes..,

Mr Justice Dermot Kinlen is not only a judger but also our splendid Irish republic's Inspector of Prisons.
He is thus one of the few chaps who not only bangs people up but goes & has a look at them later. A pillar of the establishment.

For those in the loop of Irish civil, human & other rights this last year, the recommendation by Dermot Kinlen to allow inmates in Ireland's penal community conjugal visits & rights was seen as sort of a promising thing
he's back.
he's back.

However, by md july the best of intentions & attention to a rehabiliative rather than retributive prison community those with the keys drew the line.

There's always a tiny bit of c-o-n-c-e-s-s-i-o-n though, isn't there? ireland's prisoners now get a shower in every cell, which is as far as increased privacy goes. We can not underestimate the number of our state's prisoners who might prefer group showering.

By the way those in the loop of Irish civil, human & other rights will know that there is no charter or bill of rights especially for those presently in our salubrious jails or the promised "Thornton".

& this all the stuff you learn what you obsessively watch big swinging mickey Mc Dowell & his program of "prison reform".

So we have slopping out.
no re-hab.
no education.
one excerise yard.
no Privacy
no Love.

A society is measured by the way it treats its prisoners.

and ours are treated like animals.

depending on how long you are 'in', you have to be strong-minded enough to deal with
abuse and bullying, and no sex- yeah, big swinging mickey does not like you, unless
you are white rich and catholic.
BTW:- before he went 'in' he used shave his head and get out his geology book, some people
have their own coping mechanisms.

"In the wake of three deaths in Mountjoy Prison in August, the Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) are calling upon the Government to act immediately to bring Ireland's system of prison inspection and monitoring into line with European norms. The human rights organisations are highlighting four specific areas requiring action to ensure that Ireland becomes compliant with its obligations under international human rights law."

You can also read the Irish penal reform trust's 2006 report here:-
http://www.iprt.ie/iprt/1754
"Ireland is a country with a strong orientation towards custody and with a largely underdeveloped scheme of community alternatives. Although we are mid-league in an international context in terms of our "stock" of prisoners or our average daily population (85 per 100,000 population), the "flow" of people into prison or rate of prison entry places us considerably further up the international league. The disparity between these two figures is due to our reliance on short terms of imprisonment. This would suggest that we are a country with great potential for the use of non-custodial sanctions as a means of reducing the prison population. The aim of the Report is to explore this potential by examining those alternatives to custody which have proved successful in other jurisdictions and evaluating their applicability to an Irish"

In slightly related news, irish prison officers are to be balloted for strike action by IMPACT over "decentralisation" issues.
http://www.examiner.ie/irishexaminer/pages/story.aspx-q...1.asp

& 45 prison vans for Irish prisoners will cost you €3.9m. The contract has gone to Auto manufacturers Gray & Adams (Ireland) Ltd of Newtownabbey, Co Antrim. (the wee north)

Oh! not all prisoner business left the state - sligo technical institute got a €2.2m contract to design and develop a training programme for newly-recruited prison officers who will earn "a qualification equivalent to a Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC) certificate within the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland’s framework of qualifications."

The bottom line in easy english =
(0.085% of the population is banged up on any one day)
we just spent 6.1 million euros on vans & training screws most of which went out of the state.
