Norwegian Evening with Shell to Sea

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Wednesday May 17, 2006 14:37author by Dublin Shell to Sea Report this post to the editors

Protest against Norwegian government this evening, 6.30 p.m., Belvedere Rugby Club

Shell to Sea activists will assemble this evening at 6.30 p.m. at the Belvedere Rugby Club where the Norwegian ambassador will be hosting a reception, to protest at the Norwegian government's involvement in the Corrib gas scandal through its 36.5 share in the Corrib gas field.

Syttende mai (May 17th) is commemorated every year by Norwegians all around the world to mark their country's achievement of independence. This evening, Wednesday 17th May, the Norwegian Ambassador will host a reception at Belvedere Rugby Club, 4 Anglesea Road, Dublin 4.

Statoil has a 36.5 per cent stake in the Corrib gas field. This means that the citizens of Norway will own 25 per cent of any gas extracted. Meanwhile, because of the lrish State's give-away licensing system, the people of Ireland will get nothing, and they will have to buy back their own natural resource at market rates.

We expect that people from other embassies and government ministers will be invited to this reception, and so we want to send a message to the Norwegian people that Statoil’s actions in Ireland, through their stake in the Corrib gas project, are entirely unacceptable and that this issue should be of concern to Norwegian people, who will benefit directly from the exploitation of Irish natural resources.

Shell to Sea activists will assemble this evening at 6.30 p.m. at Belvedere Rugby Club to protest and leaflet guests as they arrive, to raise their awareness about this issue. Please note that this will be an entirely peaceful protest. Directions to the rugby grounds can be found at this link: http://www.oldbelvedere.ie/html/clubdirect.htm
