overheard from two different pedestrians:
"is this gay pride?"
and
"qu'est-ce que c'est? le velo-pride?"
its definitely dying if not dead...
Just poorly advertised, how can you get the word out when not everyone reads indymedia and postering has been banned.
just a gentle reminder about tomorows bikeride

easy to say CM is dead, it was shitly organised and only a handful of flyers actually got given out pre the event, stuck on bikes, emailed out. etc....... that can be remedied if there is a wish to.
last sep, car free day we had about 40, we had about that much yesterday- not too bad for little org there was
budapest had 30,000 - how is this, why is this? was it effective?- yes, read the article on original post

good article about how a successful critical mass campaign can affect big change in the city landscape
http://criticalmass.hu/english
we are still trying to make the greenway a reality - we will leave at 12 , and hook up with the AAA and anarchist picnic at 2 -
all help, advice etc on how to turn the greenway idea into a reality is appreciated
bottom line: easy to slate, harder to dream the alternative, hardest to make the idea a reality
anyways, id fun yesterday - fair play to all who turned up and enjoyed themselves and made a little difference for a while
critical mass was ere
summary
about 40 people gathered, 2 cops accompanied most of the way
people walked, skated, rollerbladed, cylced and there were tunes from a little sounds system- blues brothers, sam and dave, punk, public enemy, house of pain.......i think
normallish route, down o'connel, dame, down by christchurch, quays,
then back over o'conell bridge and a strange kind of fizzle end outside trinity, seeing as it was a lovely day and drinking cans in the sun beckoned
ages from about 4 - 60 and lots inbetween
only incident - one of the bike lasses saw her friend and pretended to drive into her for a joke, a cop pulled her for breaking a light ; a crowd quickly gathered around the cop and nothing happened. it was rumoured though that she might have had a bomb up her dress.
folks traveled down from belfast for the ride and brought with them some class old models fresh out of belfast skips
critical massers ended up messing in the trees and the sun
about next month
up on your bike da, critical mass
As reported by others, it was a promising start for critical masses in 2006 given the lack of publicity beforehand. The weather was fine as reflected by people's spirits on the cycle ride - all good humoured and fun. As we approached the end-point, I stopped and counted 33 participants - along with 3 gardaí. A few people had to leave before the mass finished up at 7.30pm outside the gates of Trinity College.
"Just poorly advertised, how can you get the word out when not everyone reads indymedia and postering has been banned."
Stickers on bike stands, lamp posts, railings - wherever people lock their bikes. People standing at traffic lights handing out leaflets. Press releases. Emails to the political parties. Posters in the windows of bicycle shops. Celebrity endorsements. Fundraisers. Ads in all the politicla newspapers. Stickers on bank links. Texts intop the radio. Sandwich boards. Graffiti. Where there's a will there's a way.
I'm not aware that the woman who was stopped by the guards had pretended to "drive" into anyone. I chatted briefly to her after she had her name and address taken by the guard and she told me that she had slowly (and safely) gone past the rest of the stopped cyclists so that she could get ahead of them in order to take a photo (while they were all still bunched up at the traffic lights).
This should be a weekly event...
Need to get the message out that cars are killing us all!
A few more ideas for advertising:
- Make flyers that can be stapled on the handlebars of bikes and blitz all the bikes in town on a weekly basis, best to do saturdays as well as you'll catch people who may cycle to work during the week but not leave their bikes around town.
- Have loads of flyers to give out during the ride so people will know what its about
- Contact the free 'style' rags like totally dublin, they always want stuff to fill their pages.
- Contact Dublin Cycling Campaign they might put it on their mailing list.
- put it up on community exchange www.activelink.ie
- contact newstalk 106, they might do a feature or something.
- Posters in Bike shops & write to all the cycling clubs sending them posters
just run a weekly critical mass that starts at the same time and starting point? Interested participants can then just show up instead of trying to figure if it's on, where it's on etc.
Word of mouth will eventually help build up regular participants to a critical mass, so to speak.
5 months till car free day 2006 - 5 critical masses if we do it monthly and @ 20 if we do it weekly. would be good to start building momentum for car free day now. would there be interest in doing weekly critical masses?
last weekend we did the critical mass on friday, the greenway cycle on sunday and a river cycle down the dodder on mayday monday to hook up with the unmanagebles- everyone seemed to enjoy it - greeks, poles, canadians, spanish, half ozzies, a northern paddy and a few other paddys took part - a large interest was expresssed in doing more of these group cycles- and with the weather getting lovely............

Has anyone called the next CM?
How about the last Friday in May? -
i.e. Friday 26th May 2006, same time as the last but with WAY more advertising (see suggestions above).
lets start mobilising now, and hope for a sunny day.
Critical Mass is not an organization, it's an unorganized coincidence. It's a movement ... of bicycles, in the streets

Critical Mass in Dublin!
Another Critical Mass???
id like to write an article about this - can someone tell me when the next cm is on? and if anyone is up to be interviwed?
mcranty@gmail.com
Since when did CM become a playground for anything on wheels? I was disappointed, nay annoyed, to see rollerblades and skateboards getting involved, not to mention pedestrians (and then to see it on the poster on this site!?!? Anyone willing to own up...?). This is not to say that those people shouldn't be demonstrating in favour of their rights - skateparks, pedestrian friendly cities, etc. - but CM is for cyclists. Am I wrong? If we need to rely on other wheeled things to support our case (bolster our numbers) then this strikes me as an admission of defeat. Shouldn't CM be able to stand on its own two feet - I mean own two wheels?
Also, re the Green Route cycle- the involvement of anarchists is as likely to put people off as it is to attract them. I know it put me off.
Is there an automatic presumption that anyone advocating fairer treatment of cyclists has general issues with authority? I can't see the link. Seems that such an involvement would actually be counter-productive, in that it gives those authority figures to whom appeals should be directed a very easy get-out clause when attempting to dismiss or ignore the purpose of CM and other bike advocacy initiatives.
Just some food for thought, I suppose.
the greenway cycle is on again this sun, leave from usual spot, 11am, open to all, its not only anarchists which participate, duputy lord mayor was out with us last year and lots of non "political" people who enjoy bike riding and would like to see it happen.
for it to happen, we hope the council take on the idea, to promote the idea we are trying to let the idea spread into communities on the route in the hope that they get people up on bikes and also taking more ownership of their area, which, by the canals could be imroved on massivly.
anyway, hopefullly it will be a fine day
heritage council are still quite in their promoting the idea
more later on in the summer
Hi all
I'm from Hungary Budapest, and I've just found this page, and that you have CM here in Dublin as well. I've just arrived at the end of March, so I don't have my bike here, but planning to bring it when I go home for a few days probably in August. I was a CM participant in Hungary, not an organizer, but I was there when we were just a couple of hundreds of bikers, a few years ago. And you can see what it is now. This spring they were unable to ride, there were so many people.
I'm looking forward to ride with you, but first I have to get my bike here. Have you ever carried a bike with aerlingus? Any experiences?
Bye
Mattila
