Frank McBrearty & Eamon McCann: Intimidation, lies and cover-up

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Monday July 25, 2005 16:21author by Colmán Etchinghamauthor email colman.etchingham at nuim dot ieauthor address Dept of History NUI Maynoothauthor phone 087 7583908 Report this post to the editors

The state, the gardai and corruption

Frank McBrearty Jnr and Eamon McCann will speak at a meeting in Wynn's Hotel, Abbey Street, on Thursday 28 July at 7.30 pm. Frank McBrearty Jnr, a spectacular victim of garda corruption, is also eloquent about linking his case with other examples of all that is wrong with today's Ireland, such as is highlighted by the Rossport 5. Eamon McCann needs no introduction. Both will speak on the need for a new Left in Ireland, one that actively resists injustice and acts for real change.

Some more info. on the Frank McBrearty's case:-

The gardaí tried to frame Frank McBrearty for the murder of Richie Barron in
1996. The local gardaí fabricated evidence, used touts and even a false
confession from McBrearty to frame him. The gardaí organised a campaign of
intimidation against the McBreartys, their relatives and friends. The
conspiracy reached all the way to the top ranking gardai in Donegal and even
to Noel Conroy (now garda commissioner) in garda headquarters in Dublin. The
Morris tribunal found many officers including two Chief Superintendents
guilty of gross negligence and gross incompetence. When the conspiracy was
discovered the gardaí responded by closing ranks to protect themselves. This
campaign of silence was organised and helped by senior gardaí.

The Morris tribunal, despite the best efforts of McDowell and the state,
completely vindicated the McBreartys. Their demand for an apology from
McDowell is completely justified. In fact McDowell and Noel Conroy should be
sacked. The fact that they haven't proves the systemic and institutional
nature of cover-ups and corruption in the gardaí and the state.

If the McBreartys didn't have the resources to take on the gardaí and the
government they could have been steamrolled by the gardaí and the courts,
and possibly be in jail today for murder.
We live in a country where the Minister for Justice, and by extension the
gardaí, feel they can trample on all our rights. McDowell has now given the
CIA the right to come here and arrest us if they want! The CIA can now
legally interrogate and abduct Irish citizens away to Guantanamo at will.
McDowell’s new Criminal Justice Bill is designed to dovetail with the US led
clampdown on dissent and civil liberties.

The case of Frank McBrearty is just the tip of the iceberg. Many more cases
will now come to light - from Donegal to Kerry to the working class estates
of Dublin, of the reality of the regular abuse of power of the gardaí.

"Eamon McCann needs no introduction."

You wouldn't have to be told who was organising this meeting. Modesty folks goes a long way.
