Peace People to support Vanunu in Israel

Five Peace People fly out of Dublin to visit Mordechai Vanunu Saturday 16th April

PRESS RELEASE: (For immediate release)
(Press Photo Opportunity: Dublin Airport 2.30 -3.30 Saturday, 16th April, Departure Lounge)

Five Peace People are flying out from Dublin airport on Saturday 16th April to join an international delegation visiting Mordechai Vanunu the Israeli whistle-blower on the first anniversary of his release from prison, and to support his right to be free of all restrictions on his freedom one year after he has finished his eighteen year sentence.

The five Peace People who are going to visit him are: Mairead Corrigan Maguire (Nobel Peace Laureate), Kevin Cassidy (Chairperson) and Executive members Ann Patterson, Regina O'Callaghan and Justin Morahan.

There has been widespread international opposition to the placing of sanctions on Vanunu after his release. The release last April was marred by these sanctions. He had been imprisoned for eighteen years after a secret trial because he had revealed secrets of Israel's nuclear reactor in Dimona. His imprisonment (including solitary confinement for nearly twelve of those years) was condemned by Amnesty International and Human Rights groups in Israel and around the world.

The five Peace People intend to stay in Israel until Saturday April 23rd.

Norway will not grant asylum to Israeli nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu, the Associated Press reported Friday (see GSN, April 13).

The Norwegian government confirmed Friday that it had rejected Vanunu’s application in November.

“We have instructed (the immigration directorate), based on foreign policy consideration, that he must get a rejection. No one gets asylum in Norway when they have not applied in Norway,” said Erna Solberg, minister of local government and regional development. “We do not intend to invite Vanunu by giving him political asylum as an extraordinary measure.”

Vanunu has applied for asylum from several nations. Sweden last year rejected his application, also stating that Geneva Conventions rules require asylum seekers to file the request in the country to which they seek to move, AP reported.

How about applying to Iran for asylum.

This new anti-nuclear poster boy could then protest at the imminent bombing of their nuclear weapons facilities.
Much like he protested at the destruction of Osirak.

Israeli nukes bad.
Arab nukes....

180,000 convictions to be exact.
He wanted more, but that was all the Sunday Times were prepared to pay.

Nicolo,

Was Vanunu's action worthwhile?
Actually, I believe it was worthwhile.

Israel probably knew he would try to sell his story. He duly does, no actual secrets were lost, no details, no specifics.
However, the Arab Leagus wet their pants and have a serious rethink about the ol' War of Annihiliation gig. Very worthwhile.
