SEX, DRUGS, ROCK N' ROLL. This is what you can typically expect from a USS GM and this one will be no different. It is being held in Dublin on the 29th and 30th March. It is a fantastic chance for all second level students to voice their opinions and ideas on issues such as discipline in schools.

This year the GM will be held in The Teachers Club on Parnell Square. It is also an excellent opportunity for students to get more involved in the union as there are four board positions up for election; Secretary, Fundraiser, Eduaction and Development Officer and Press Officer. Aswell, there are two regional positions vacant. The meeting's agenda is packed full of workshops, guest speakers and elections. This is also our chance to introduce you to our new Secretary General. Accomodation and entertainment will be provided by the USS on the Tuesday night. Enterainment includes top acts such as Robbie Bonham, comedian and other home grown celebreties. This is the only event of its kind so don't miss out!! Apply today by returning an application form to us via email at usstreasurer@hotmail.com or ring us on 087 7831651 Keep checking our website for updates on motions which will be voted on at the GM and the agenda. We look forward to seeing you there. From the USS national committee and GM prep team.

A GM for secondary students. I read somewhere lately that third level students of today are by and large apathetic towards issues other than internal ones, fees, curriculum and such like, and that the hope for radical thought among students on issues of human rights, justice, peace, the environment etc resides in the second level at present.

This may or may not be true. However, there appears to have been little of value happening among third level students on any of these issues recently. (Please correct me if I am wrong).

Contrast the University of Edinburgh whose students recently voted in Mordechai Vanunu, Israel's nuclear whistleblower and ex-prisoner (18 years, including 11 in solitary) as their Rector. By this act they told the world that they were aware of major events in countries as far away as Israel and that Vanunu was to them a hero.

Now that the same Rector is going to be tried again on April 6th before we can visit him in Jerusalem for the first anniversary of his restricted release, it would be nice to see a motion of support for him among the list of "broader issues" motions on your agenda.

Re the war in Iraq, there were thousands and thousands of your fellow students on the streets trying to prevent it and I feel that this energy should be maintained and channelled maybe into further resolutions for some form of monitoring of events, writing to newspapers, protest and similar actions.

Among the issues more closely related to secondary schools themselves, as a former teacher I would also like to see the issue of bullying (at all levels) being discussed by you. I believe that there is criminal neglect on the part of the authorities in not facing up to this issue. It will not go away, but it is at present under the carpet. The tools are all there but are they being used to really prevent bullying in your school?

Congratulations again on your initiative and best of luck with your GM.
