It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Keith Martin declares as Independent Candidate

Keith Martin throws his hat in the ring

Keith Martin has declared himself as an Independent candidate for a seat on Westport Town Council.

Keith Martin has declared himself as an Independent candidate for a seat on Westport Town Council. Keith has been an active member of the community since his 20s beginning with his petition in 2000 against the development of the Northwoods as an amenity area.

Keith has also raised his concerns over the redevelopment of Westport over recent years and its effects on the Town‘s heritage. He has raised a number of points concerning the changes to Bridge Street and the reduction in the number of parking spaces in the town.

Keith has campaigned for voters rights concerning electronic voting and was part of the campaign calling for a “None of the above” button on voting machines which would give people the right to reject the candidates and measure voter dissatisfaction.

Keith recently debated the use of CCTV, improved street lighting and increased Garda presence in combating late night disorder on RTE’s Marion Finuncane show. He has also been featured on Mid West Radio and Castlebar’s CRC highlighting a range of concerns and his letters have been published often in the Mayo News, Connaught Telegraph and in The Western People.

Keith has also been a very active member of the Pinewoods residents’ association and he currently serves as Chairman of the Pairc Na Coille residents’ association.

Last month Keith was awarded a €2,000 grant by the Heritage Council of Ireland to research the history of a series of war graves which are scattered throughout the county.

Keith is the son of Andy and Mary Martin of the Pinewoods and is a former pupil of Rice College. Keith holds a Higher National Diploma in Print Journalism and an Honours BA degree in Media from Thames Valley University. Keith works as a Branch Librarian at Westport Public Library.

Keith paid tribute to Sean Staunton and Patrick Durcan for their hard work as public representatives over the years. Keith said “Westport was lucky to have had councillors of their calibre. They leave a high standard for other candidates to follow. They will be missed.”

i like the tardis illustration, but wouldn't it be a better solution for the council just to ask the
Bank of Ireland for the garden site, and the youngsters of Westport could do a spot of permaculture and art and so on.
Offering public space in such a way, could demonstrate to many in the community delightful creativity, and save on the meagre resources of the council. Buying the site from the B.of I. seems like a waste of money.

Oh and you link to politics.ie but not to indymedia. Westportians surely with such European connections in thier past, which you indeed hold a bursary to investigate, could enjoy the chat and info offered by the global indymedia network no?

=make that link.

Hello,

I have a link to indymedia.ie on the front page.

The Bank was asked to donate. Instead it sold to the highest bidder a developer who topped the reasonable offer by the town council.

The builder intends to develop the walled garden one of only a few left in the country.

Aren't they a disgrace ?

Thanks for the feedback and I will put a link up on the links page.

Cheers
Keith

Certainly he has time to denouce this 'individualist' who puts his own ego before the 'movement' too?

good luck in your campaign.

The words that you put in quotes are not ones that I used. I know nothing about Keith Martin and he is not putting himself foward as an anti-war candidate.

Maybe you should think more about trying to come up with a reason why a vote for Eoin would be good for the anti-war movement and less about ways to have a go at me.

let's not be too critical, if Keith had an offshore bank account, he wouldn't be discussed on politics.ie would he?
But he loves the place. Now maybe he's the best sort of candidate to do the job out there?
or perhaps not.
Let's test him.
let's find the perfect candidates for every constituency, along the dustin lines, and field them.
