Press Release- May Day protest organisers meet Gardai to demand right to march April

Members of Another Europe is Possible, the alliance which is organising a Carnival and march on May 1st will meet the Gardai tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 10am to demand the right to march to the Phoenix Park as planned.

For more info contact 086 1523542

The Gardai were informed of the plans for May Day over a month ago. These plans include meeting at Dame Street at 12 noon and holding some street theatre, music and speakers and then marching across O Connell Bridge and along the Quays to the Phoenix park where there will be a Carnival to celebrate Multiculturalism with music from KingSativa, Soukous Allstars, Africkico and others.

Rory Hearne, May Day Carnival organiser said “It is now being suggested to us by the Gardai that our right to march to the Phoenix Park and hold the carnival could be restricted. Our plans for the day are very similar to the outline of the Feb 15th Anti-War march last year and are completely peaceful as are all groups planning to protest on the day. The 25 EU heads of state will be in Farmleigh house and we have a democratic right to march and express our concerns over the EU governments’ policies of racism, war and privatisation.”

He further added “Patricia Mckenna, Green Party MEP, Mick O Rielly (ATGWU) and Richard Boyd Barrett (IAWM) will be joining us to demand our right to march tomorrow when we meet the Gardai. We want a peaceful day and feel that our right to march should be respected. We will be releasing a statement after the meeting”

you can't trust the cops, they've lied before and they'll lie again. their agenda is to stop any effective protests and to discredit anti globalisation activists in public

No surprise really, hate to say i told you so and all that, you can't trust the cops. if you tell them your plans they'll pretend to support you until the last minute when they'll change their minds and its too late to change the plans

Its to make them look like the good guys and get the cops attention on to the Grass Roots demo. Can we now expect SP articles ala Evian warning against Black Block Cop infiltration of Grass Roots?

It has been announced that AEIP have cancelled their march as the gardai refused them permission - is this true?

author by Davidpublication date Thu Apr 22, 2004 13:12author address author phone Report this post to the editors

AEIP still plan to start the carnival from dame street (even though there is an exclusion zone around Dublin castle) and they still intend to go march down the south quays. He didnt indicate whether this was against the wishes of the Gardai.

It appears that this media event might only be because the SWP wont be allowed inside the gates of the phoenix park, even though the SWP had resigned themselves to a concert outside Heuston Station for the last few weeks at least..
A bit confusing?

The media are announcing that the marches have been cancelled which is a message thats going to have to be countered!

Lets not through around accusations that deepen divisions. If it is true AEIP have cancelled their march then their obvious reaction should be to call on people to instead join the DGN one and thus refuse to accept the ban on demonstrations. Lets not throw up barriers to them doing so.

It's quite clear that the state actions (lets not just blame the cops, I don't believe they are making the decisions here, they are just 'following orders') are intended to make large demonstrations impossible on the Mayday weekend. Its a real challenge for us to get a large demonstration together in a peaceful way in that situation but this is the challenge we are rising to. All out over the May weekend!
