offsite link Thank Lockdowns for the Worst Budget in History Sat Nov 22, 2025 13:00 | Will Jones
We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

World Kindness Day may have passed you by. But it won't have passed by your children, whose school will have been sure to teach that climate action and open borders are essential elements of 'kindness', says Steven Tucker.

ATGWU Motion calling on the DCTU to hold their traditional May Day March

category dublin | summit mobilisations | news report author Thursday April 08, 2004 15:09author by Union head Report this post to the editors

The Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU) have a motion down for next Tuesday night's Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) General Delegates Meeting calling on them to have their traditional May Day March, or to at least support the alternative May Day March organised by the Another Europe Is Possible (AEIP) mobilising by having their banner on the march and informing their members of it, in other words to reverse their outrageous decision to cancel their traditional annual May Day March. I think that it's really important to get as many sympathetic delegates as possible along on Tuesday night and that we should all speak out loudly and forcibly in favour of the ATGWU motion. I'm calling on anyone reading this who knows someone involved with the DCTU or Trade Unions generally to strongly encourage them to attend, and to participate in Tuesday night's meeting.

Another front is possible is a failed SWP front. Nobody else is involved. If they call their own march, grassroots and the SWP will join it. If they join the another front march, they will be lonely stooges of the SWP.

Lets get real here - Press conference today with SF and Greens and ATGWU supporting forcefully the AEIP March - it is a little more complicated than you are making it out to be.

The little beardy twat might have been wrong about most things but for christ sake lads it doesn't look like he was wrong about infantile disorder.

1. The ATGWU is about the most left wing union in Ireland - its not saying much but it is.

2. Their call is for the DCTU march to be uncancelled.

3. We can't help it if they are more disposed to the AEIP types.

4. We have to show them we are serious about what we do, it might take time but ffs stop with the hair trigger replies.

The whole fiasco of the Dublin May Day March that was cancelled by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) on the dicktat of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) without any opposition from that former ultra radical in his day, the most militant of them all (At the time of course) Sam Nolan (DCTU Secretary) proves the case more than ever for a new Trade Union completely independent from the so-called Congress of Trade Unions that is merely another tool of the Government. That Union, the Independent Workers Union (I.W.U.) was established in Cork last Saturday, and we're not going away you know.

We're absolutely delighted that Ahern's jamboree on O'Connell Street has been cancelled, not just because it has left them with egg on their faces, but because it is now exposing the real reason for the DCTU's totall unwillingness to hold the traditional May Day March this year, namely that to use their words, they're terrified of any trouble on May Day this year, and they don't want to be associated with Anti-capitalist, Leftist, Anti-globalisation, Anarchist groups and anybody who does not fit into their narrow right wing side of the so-called Labour Party mould.

Lest anyone thinks that this is just a serious Dublin issue, this has also raised it's ugly head in Cork. The Cork Council of Trade Unions (CCTU) are also seriously considering their May Day March this year. And their excuse? Roadworks on Patrick Street!

We wish the ATGWU and all of the various Anti-capitalist, Leftist, Anti-globalisation, Anarchist groups of whatever your very diverse views the very best on your May Day mobilisations this year, and we will fully support you'se as much as we can on May Day.

Just to repeat what I've said before, these so-called socialists in the trade union movement would give shame a worse name. This is the time for working class people to take control of May Day and take it out of the hands of SIPTU etc. The I.W.U.and certain heads in the A.T.G.W.U. with rank and file workers should meet on May 2nd to plan next year's May Day! Lets once and for all start to push Fleming, O'Connor and Gerathy etc with their lackies and the like to the side.
