We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

BUSH TO MEET IRISH POLITICIANS IN LONDON – BOOST TO IRISH PEACE PROCESS ON EVE OF CRUCIAL ELECTION

Confidential sources have confirmed that US president George Bush has invited leaders of the main pro Agreement parties in the North of Ireland to a special summit in London next week. The main purpose of Bush’s British visit is to hold talks with Prime Minister Tony Blair on the growing crisis in Iraq.

Downing Street and White House sources are portraying this "bold move" as a “timely boost” to a process stalled by disagreements between two of the main party leaders in Northern Ireland, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams and Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has dismissed claims that this is a cynical move designed to deflect attention from massive protests in Britain against Bush and the US/UK occupation of Iraq.

Damn it is there no grass roots/left wing element in Sinn Féin who will stand up To Gerry and Martin on their anti war record??? I remember during the Afghanistan war being on an anti war protest in Dublin with Sinn féin B.Á.C. and Ógra Shinn Féin while Martin was busy shaking hands with Colin Powell. Appart from meeting Bush (Daddys little war criminal) on a number of previous occasions (and having the rest of their party outside protesting!!!)they also pulled out of a Shannon Airport protest in June because a fence was going to be pulled down in an effort to get the U.S. Army out. At the same time 44 parnell square was selling posters of a man in a balaclava using an angle grinder on a fence at a British military installation in the six counties. Whats the difference? neither the British or American armed forces have any right to be in Ireland.

WE SERVE NEITHER QUEEN NOR COWBOY BUT IRELAND!

Good to see the SP turn around their analysis. The 'only show in town' view was particularly cretinous.

the peace process is a rotten sectarian deal, in the words of rage against the machine "what you reap is what you sow".

while trimble goes on like the rat from a sinking ship, cant he see past the end of his nose an that this was the likely outcome where no tangible benefits ever handed out to anyone. but, then again we should remember that this was a deal done solely on the basis that both sides agreed they couldn't reconcile themselves to each others position. so what do you do when that happens? INSTITUTIONALISE THE DIVISION!

the reason no benefits have really come down to people here, is because there was never supposed to be, sf for all there talk of an "ireland of equals" (tell me what is this other than a liberal plea for a better society?) really wants an ireland of economic free will were exploitation "creates"jobs for us all.

we need an agreement and peace process that is come to by agreement by the ordinairy people of NI not by the sectarian political leaders who incapsulate the division and bitternesss of todays political landscape.

i find it incredibly wierd living in a society as divided as my own. we need a real genuine voice for the workers of the north, one that puts the interest of all workers frist that tackles the p;overty and deprivation of this place.

to end a challenge to sf-boycott bush!

So Bush is to meet the pro agreement parties and this is supposed to be a good sign.
Doesn't anyone get it? If Bush comes to Britain to prop up his imperialist policies in Iraq, does anyone really think that his policies for the north are anti imperialist? That is, anyone outside the republican movement?

If there is one thing the US is consistent in, is its persuit of its own interests and its determination to defend imperialism everywhere. So why do people keep talking about the peace process here as if it was the saviour of the oppressed rather than the rotten sectarian deal that it is. A deal which guarantees the conditions for imperialism continuing to dominate this island.

NI political party leaders should boycott bush.
